What are the direct and non-direct competitors of TL Type S?

Actually I don't think there is direct competitor for TL Type S after you consider all the important factors like horsepower, torque, price, amenities, size of car, size of engine, drivetrain configurations, etc.
However, the following are the ones I could think of:

Acura TL Type S 3.2L NA V6 260hp FF

Lexus GS300 3.0L NA I6 225hp FR
Lexus GS400 4.0L NA V8 300hp FR
Lexus IS300 3.0L NA I6 215hp FR
BMW 330 3.0L NA I6 225hp FR
BMW 530 3.0L NA I6 225hp FR
Nissan Maxima 3.0L NA V6 227hp FF
Audi S4 2.7L Turbo V6 250hp F4WD

These are all 4 door luxury sport sedans with engine displacements between 3liter to 4 liter(except S4), and are priced from $28000-$48000. Since BMW 540 is too expensive, so I don't want to list it here. I just think it's fun to list them here, hehe.

Can cars with factory mods be included? If so, the Toyota Camry with TRD supercharger belongs on your list, like so:

Toyota TRD Camry 3.0L SC V6 260hp FF

What does the FF and FR stand for on the end of the car names/stats?

Front and rear wheel drive? or something?

Rest assured, there are plenty of competitors to the Acura TL-S in performance, luxury, value or any combination of the above:

Buick Regal GS (dead-on competitor)
Chrysler LHS
Chrysler 300M (dead-on competitor)
Dodge Intrepid R/T
Infiniti I30t
Oldsmobile Aurora 4.0L
Oldsmobile Intrigue GLS
Pontias Bonneville SSEi
Lexus ES300
Mazda Millenia S
Volvo S60 T5 (dead-on competitor)
Saab 9-5 Aero (dead-on competitor)

The qualifications were:
1. Luxury mid-size FWD 4-door "sporty" sedans
2. A generously spec'ed example can be had for under $45K
3. Over 210hp and 217lb/ft or torque. The dead-on competitors feature considerably more than that minimum, and because they usually do it with more torque than the TL-S, they'll probably give the TL-S a good run for its money at a stoplight.

Oh FF stands for Front engine Front wheel drive. FR stands for Front engine Rear wheel drive.

Also, I agree that Volvo S60 T5 is considered as one of the competitors. But I think ES300 and I30 should be considered the direct competitors to regular TL, since they are more a family luxury sedan than a sport sedans. I only thought about imports, it's true huh there are lots of domestic also on the list. Wow lots of choice.
