why does everyone in this price range need to get a brand new car...
take the 20g and get a really nice used car. that is step up from all the things you could buy new. plus the depreciation fact.

This is his first car he ever bought and now that he can afford a car he wants something new.
I personally told him a used WRX would be fun

What about a Jetta? I think 05 is the last model year before the new one debuts, so that shouldn't be out of the price range.
What about an Accord coupe? An 04 Focus SVT 5-door? Can't you get a used IS300 for about 20K also?

The SRT-4 is like $21k and it has enough power to drive him into a speeding frenzy. If he is fixated on buying a new car I would definitely go with this car. Since most people debate over speed or luxury, you aren't going to get bundles of comfort from a car that costs $18k, so you might as well opt for a car that'll blow the doors off the quick Japanese and German sedans on the market, and a lot of American cars as well.
If your friend doesn't mind getting into a used car, there are so many cars he could buy for under $20k it is ridiculous. The previous posters have made that well-documented.

Well just drove all those cars and i just NOW got home
He wanted to be under $320 a month for 60 (didnt tell the dealers that)
Realized we should be looking for cars around $16k range. So we didnt bother with most listed here.
Scion was 16k sticker. Nice car for the money.... dealers only had a test car. A month wait for one. Plus i was turned off by a ugly 16 year old chick next to us while driving taking pics of the car. She must have thought it was cute, like I did.
03 maxima - was really nice, but he didnt like the exterior styling.
03 RSX-S - What a peice of shit. WOW.
02 CLS - he liked it but dealer wouldnt go under $20k and he didnt like the loose steering.
05 - mazda 3. GREAT FUCKING CAR. no joke i was impressed (lil slow but hey). But again both dealers were low on stock and wouldnt go under $19k
Now heres where the shit thickens..... I mention we should swing by the VW dealer...
So there it is, a shiney 2002 VW jetta 1.8t fully loaded with a 5-speed, also is certified. Has 41k miles. So he drove it and loved it. They were asking $15k but i got them down to $13,900. So we got his payments WAY below what he wanted for a car he liked better than anything else we drove. I made them run all the service records and everything came clean and well maintained.

Yea he knows it is, even mentioned that at the dealer. But he loved the way the car drove and wanted it. Hell for $14k the car looked brand new, I would have done it too.
