Went to look at a G8 . . .

So this past Wednesday I went to the Buick Pontiac GMC dealership in St. Charles to look at a White V6 G8 that I saw on the dealer website. I called them and asked about the car but they were really busy so I said I'd just come in after work and see if there was anything available. I get to the dealership and ask the secretary about the car and she says she'll have someone help me out asap. It takes half an hour for Zorn the sales man to come and talk to me about test driving the one I saw online. He says that he'll will go find it and about 15 minutes later he comes back and says he hasn't found the car yet. So I walk up towards the front window and scan the cars in the lot and find it in a couple of seconds. Finally, we go for the test drive. He's telling me the details about the car and I ask him how to change the setting from kilometers per hour to miles per hour and he doesn't know how to do that and will have someone show me how thats done when we get back. Not a huge deal but it would have been nice to have a better sense of how fast I was driving. We keep going and I honestly think he was starting to fall asleep because from the corner of my eye I think I see his head bobbing like it does when someone's trying not to fall asleep but can't help it. Eventually we end up in Aurora and he tells me we're lost. Since he hadn't told me to turn anywhere I figured he knew where we were going but I had to pull into a gas station and he went inside to ask for directions. He comes back out, opens the door, and starts smoking a cigarette. So I'm sitting in the car and the smell of smoke is coming in through the open door and so is the cold air. I don't say anything and we start heading back at which point he pulled out a bag of chips (don't know what kind) and eats them.

We get back and go inside so his manager Alex can talk about the price. Since he never did show me the milage I converted it on my phone and it came out to 7,000 miles(on the site its listed as new and no milage is given). I wait in his office and he comes in and says that its a new car that they normally sell for $32K but they are giving $6K off so the price would be $26K. I ask him if I can have a moment so I can think it over and when he comes back I ask him how much lower he can go since the car has 7K miles on it already. He gets defensive and states that he can sell the car as new because it has never been titled (which I personally think is a joke because in that case he could tell me a car with 40K miles on it is also new because the dealer never sold it). I ask him for a moment again and at this point I'm ready to just say thanks but no thanks. I check my phone and see a V6 G8 at another dealership with 9K miles on it for $20K. I want to see if there is any way he can come anywhere close to that price otherwise I was going to go there because the only difference between the two cars was the price and color. He comes in and I tell him about that car and tell him that it looks like a simple decision looking at the numbers. So he tells me that I should just leave then. That kind of threw me off guard. I thought that he would at least politely tell me that he couldn't help me but he basically just told me to get out. I got up and started to put my jacket and scarf on and he said he wasn't going to have a pissing contest with me. He then went into how the car has a Corvette engine and how great it is. And at that point I had enough and told him that there is no such thing as a V6 Corvette engine and that the brand doesn't exist anymore and that he was being a complete asshole. As I started walking out of his office he got up and said "get the fuck out of here" and pointed at the door. I turned around and just looked at him just he could know that I thought he was a complete joke. He came up and tried to get in my face and I honestly think he wanted me to punch him out just so he could try and sue me. Instead I turned back around and started walking out the door. He followed me and told me to never come back. Which I responded with I never will because he's a scam artist.

So no G8 for me. Yesterday I did go to Fox Valley VW in West Chicago to look at some more cars and ended up buying a 2010 2 door carbon steel gray GTI w/DSG for $24,600. So what started out as a horrible dealer experience ended up with me being amazingly happy with a brand new vdub. And I'll post pics when its not 14 degrees out side.

Apologizes for the length!!

Damn sounds like a frustrated and angry car salesman. I personally hate going to dealerships because I've had bad eperiences with salespeople doing the hard sell. You did the right thing by not escalating the situation any further. Otherwise they could've called the police on you for disorderly conduct. Congrats on your new car purchase.

That sounds like a terrible dealership. That is no way to treat a customer. You should complain about his actions to the district manager or something. Try Woody Pontiac GMC Buick in Elgin. They were always nice to my dad when he was looking at their cars.

I emailed the dealer this link. I have no reason to deal with them directly but maybe they will learn not to treat people this way in the future because it will cost them more business. But for all I know this will just end up with Alex the "manager" I dealt with and will be completely ignored.

You have more patience then I do buddy. I would have walked out after waiting the first time. This is a time period in our country where the consumer is in short supply. I don't believe that the customer is always right but if I were a car salesman I'd be treating serious buyers like kings when they walk through the door. These guys are clearly amatures and have no interest in either cars or money.

I agree with knight rider. You were way too patient. The guy wasn't interested in selling you the car, so you should've left then.

I would e-mails the DM just to get even with him for being such an asshat. I have little patience for prick salemen, finance managers, and even general managers who like to play games. The sad thing is they'll prob find some fool who'll actually buy that car at that price...

You should have a word with the General Manager or the owner if he's available. I would think he'd be interested to know how you were treated at his dealership....

Stealership FTL ...

... I would have been out of there like the guy pulled a gun on me... I usually do not wait very long or very well...

... if I had stayed that long, I would not have left there until someone explained to me how a car dealership can have cursing and physically threatening salespeople / managers and not be on the 6'oclock news...

Agree with Knight Rider and Neuronbob. You did the right thing not elevating or escalating this.

But the end result is you have a nice new VW, and that asshole is going to be out of a job.

Call him outside, get in your new car and peel-out as he walks out.

Great choice on the vdub, I'm sure it won't disappoint. Enjoy it!

The dollars speak louder then words, much like you did, take your money elsewhere and tell everyone you know to do the same. Eventually the word of bad business spreads and the problem solves itself.

The ironic thing is that the dealer honestly no more than a minute from where I work so I'll be driving past it in the gti 5 days a week.

I was as patient as humanly possible IMO, but by the end he knew if he did anything completely brainless like trying to take a swing at me he would have ended up face down on the ground and enjoying a nice jail cell that night.

Jesus, I cannot believe how you were treated at that dealership. The G8 itself is not a bad car, I had one as a rental once for a couple of days and it drove quite nicely. It's just a shame that those asshats treated you the way they did.

Congrats on your new GTi as well! The redesign VW did is truly outstanding in it's own.

It figures that of all the dealerships GM closed, this wasn't one of them. Perhaps GM should've looked into customer service instead of sales numbers. What's worse than too many dealerships? Bad dealerships with unacceptable service. "Get the fuck out of here" has no place in such a setting. I would call GM corporate and tell them how they lost a sale because a sales manager said such vulgar words. Oh, wait. GM probably doesn't care.

My dad had a similar experience with the local Hyundai dealer over a new one with 7k miles on the odo and them not budging and the manager treating him like crap. My dad ended up going to a different dealer that treated him like royalty

I swear some dealerships are only interested in selling cars to suckers who will pay $4k over sticker like sheep. It sounds to me like that dealer is probably going under and doesn't care or they just don't care, period. Regardless of their MO, kudos to you for keeping a level head and not decking that dumbass...I would have.

Congrats on the GTI!

Congratulations on your new ride.

And you dealership experience makes me wonder how much longer they can hang on to business with that attitude.

Edit: Apart from sending the owner of the dealership the link to this page, if you find time, you should forward this to the GM Corporate service too.

I'm sorry to hear that. I'm glad it worked out for your dad at the other dealership, though. (A different Hyundai dealership, I assume.)

I may not be able to pull off magic, but let me know if you or your dad ever have a serious problem with the Hyundai dealership(s). I can relay the information to HMA and look into it. It's just not acceptable and need to be corrected.

Again, my apologies if it means anything.

Maybe, when I bought my 05 TL back in 2004, I was 19. I had money ready in my wallet and went to Cerritos Acura. I told the salemen that I wanted to purchase a brand new TL. He was like "are you serious? get the fuck out, you young punk".

I walked out immediately and went to Weir Canyon Acura. They treated me well, so I bought the car. I headed back to Cerritos Acura and stared at this salemen who gave me the attitude. He was like .

stupid noob ass.

plus, i was immature. lol
