The plumpness of the car stilll kinda reminds me of the USDM Corolla. The wheelwells disappoint me, I liked the last model with the huge wheelwells... made the car look more grounded.
the rear is kinda meh...
Junkster, who thinks VW didn't try hard enough.

The car looks like a current Corolla with a bit of Civic thrown into its roofline, almost a mini-Phaeton. I don't find anything terribly offensive about it, but the car looks like it's grown and has design cues befitting a larger car like the chrome strip around the windows. Hopefully it has the power and interior to match - VW needs this and the new Golf to be winners.

What I find even more amusing is that the CEO of Audi America was rather critical of VW's recent designs and business decisions (namely, the Phaeton and the major failure it was). The next day, he was fired by VAG.
He knew what he was talking about, they should have listened.

Maybe the premise behind VW giving this version of the Jetta a "Japanese" look would give VW a higher initial quality survey on the Consumer Reports surveys that everyone seems to squabble about.

My initial impression is that I liked the old one better, but it could grow on me. One of my good friends drives a red '00 Jetta and it's quite a looker.
Was thinking, what exactly does the Jetta compete with in the NA market? Pricewise it is slightly above Civic and low-end Accord territory, but the thing is smaller than a Civic (possibly even a subcompact?)! I mean, the base model does come with a good set of features, but still...
Ha, just looked up the VW website and the comparison tool lists the following cars as "similar" for me to compare the GL 2.0L 115hp version to:
BMW 325i ***
Dodge SRT-4
Ford Focus SE
Honda Civic LX
Lexus IS300 Sports Cross ***
Mazda3
Nissan Altima 2.5
Nissan Sentra 1.8s
Subaru Imprezza WRX
Subaru Legacy 2.5GT
Subaru Outback
Toyota Corolla S
Volvo V40 A ***
I'm sure that list is some kind of auto-generated list, HOPEFULLY. I doubt half of those cars would be cross-shopped with a Jetta, no matter how nice it is. What's with the three luxo/premium brands in the list? I bet their respective companies hate having a VW compared to them. Also, what's with the cheap Focus and Civic in the list?
Anyway...

Of note: Just went over to VWVortex to see what they were saying about it. Seems most of them think it's
They also love to hate on the Japanese cars while commenting on the new Jetta. Kinda hard to read with all the hating going on. To each their own I suppose.

Sicklex: Alot of companies, I would think. Toyota is the GREATEST car company of all times... the Corolla is a huge world-car which the Accord couldn't possibly match, since it's a tarted-up econobox...
Junkster, who does actually think that the Corolla is a great car

The current Jetta looks so much better...

Like all the other line ups in the world the top down look alike theme is evident in the Jetta. I can just see it now: your 70K Phateon looks like a 15K Jetta.

OMG! This makes total sense. A few years back Porsche (VAG) invited several retired Toyota excs to visit them, Porsche Canyon testing Toyota hybrid system and this Corollaish looking Jetta! Toyota and VW sitting on a tree. K I S S I N G........

Folks in LA will be able to see the car first at the show there in Jan.
Some of the specs for the car can be found in this autoweek article:

6 speed tiptronic, DSG automanual, 5 cyl 2.5L engine - in the entry level sedan offering. Sounds like they raided some high end Audi parts bin.

New Jetta
I was checking pictures of the new Jetta, and is it just me, or does the back look like our TSX? This car looks Japanese too.

The overall shape does resemble a Corolla...but then again, I also think the shape of the new RL resembles a Corolla.

It's more the position/shape of the headlights and how the rear tails look...
