Anyone here have any Volvo experience? Are they reliable? After 100k, do they still run? Kinda like this...

My family's old 83 Volvo DL Station Wagon lasted for 288,000+ miles. The 91 Volvo 740 Turbo lasted about 180,000 miles.

the 850's are pretty reliable. but once they started with the s70's and newer is when the reliability became questionable. check out www.swedespeed.com

Thanks everyone. I'm going for something different, preferably a wagon. I posted earlier the V6 Accord sedan which is pretty good as well, but I want a wagon I think. I always liked the 850 wagons. Im gonna go test drive it this weekend. He says he has all the dealer service records also, so I'll check those out to make sure everything was maintained.

yeah, I see it only has 190hp and needs premium, that kinda sucks right now. 2.69/gal I think its up to by me now. Maybe more. I use the cheap stuff

If I had to go for the 850, it'd be T5-R all the way.

Whats the specs on the T5R?

So the car I posted has 130K on it. Would it be safe to assume it would last me another 2-3 years? I dont plan on modding or anything. What are some things to check for when I go to see it? Any physical signs? Noises?

Audi A4 wagon will run me more than my budget will allow. I want to spend no more than 6k, maybe 7. I just need something to run for a few years, but also would like the space of a wagon.

the non turbo one is only 168hp, still needs premimum gas

my frd tried to put 87 gas and it couldn't move at all, just too slow

the 190hp is the light pressure turbo version in 1996, in the GLT

max torque at 1800rpm, that thing pulls but they are pretty rare, and again...turbo cars don't last long

I had a '96 850-turbo sedan and loved it. The most fun was blowing away young dudes in previous generation Mustangs just for the look on their faces. 0-60 with the turbo was like one onethousand, two onethousand, then OMFG! It's important to remember that Volvo traditionally lies about hp. numbers because of Swedish tax laws-the cars are lots faster than the numbers would lead you to believe.

As far as reliability goes they are solid but expensive to maintain. Don't even consider a non-turbo model if you are under age 60.

When my brother was looking for a car last year he was looking at the S60R. He didnt end up getting it becuase a few other people on my street have volvos and they said that the reliability was crap and the maintenance was pretty expensive. After talking to them he decided to go another route and within a few months all the volvos on my street had disappeared.

i think as far as wagons go, saab 9-5 wagon is pretty sweet. especially the aero version. i've driven an 05 arc (2.3 turbo) auto, and it was better than i expected. saab's resale value's horrible, too, so you can find a relatively new one for cheap. it has a nice balance of room, speed, style, safety, etc.

then again, i'm a big saab fan... not many people like saabs.

My parent's are on their 2nd Volvo. Had an '89 740GL ... had it for 11 years, 80000km ... that thing was rock solid. Now have a '00 S70 ... some electrical issues here and there but nothing the dealer didn't fix under warranty. I do think that Ford's meddling has really brought engine reliability down, however, design and some ergonomics of the interior has greatly improved.

I've always been under the impression that the turbo in the Volvo has always been its achilles heel. I would NEVER buy a turbo from a Swedish car make (Volvo or Saab). Keep in N/A, thanks.

Used to work for Volvo. The 850's like this one here are pretty reliable. Not as reliable as Jap cars, but they arent bad. Like others have said, they are very expensive to maintain if something goes wrong which sucks. The worse Volvos now with reliability problems is hands down the S80. That thing is horrible. Never consider that car used. We had many 850's over 200K come in for routine service and they always run great.

The 850 GLT has some pretty nice power. Like someone else said right around 2,000rpms the car just hauls. Its pretty peppy and the turbo swoosh in the 850 is absolutely beautiful. Not muted like the newer models.

Fully check out the car before you buy, and make you decision. From the pic, it seems to be well maintained. It has IPD parts. This guy/gal might have floored the car a few times.

Magneto, which car are you referring to, the T5-R? Pebecl, if you can get the T5-R, go for it, as long as its "stock". If its modified, be a lil wary on it though. If you do get the car, you can keep it stock, or mod it here and there.
