Two blown engines, and my car is gone for the week...

Two of my friends blew their engines this week.

Andrew with the Type-R (ran low 13's last time, capable of 12's now) had his engine shot to shit while dyno-tuning a few days ago. The exhaust cam gear slipped and sent the timing to 15 degrees advanced. The end result was a total and utter destruction of his engine.

Just tonight, Gareth blew his motor in his Civic. Modded D15 with VTEC head swap and what have you.

I've posted about this before, but every time one of us has bad luck, others followed the pattern. But this is the worst case of bad luck we've ever had.

Andrew had to go back to Chicago for school and work tonight, and didn't have a car. So I decided to let him borrow it until Friday. I've never let anybody borrow my car except for my younger brother, and it felt so weird seeing him take off with my car.

So yeah, that's the story of us this week. Time for me to arrange alternate transportation now, I guess.

Sounds like you're a great friend to these guys. I remember you mentioning about the bad luck, it sounds like it keeps continuing, hopefully everyone will get good luck at the same time.

Wow that sucks.

Those valves were turned into guacamole.

No chance in hell. We'd rather go through blown engines than ride stock.

Mr Hyde --

Yeah, the sodium inside the valve stems came out and melted the pistons. You can see it in the picture with the finger in one of the pistons.

Will do. Thanks, D.

I'm probably gonna go to Stanton in the next few weeks. Most likely a Sunday Test & Tune session, since it starts at 10... cooler air.

But I have to replace the O2 sensor first. I blew it again.

Wow - you're bigger man than me, especially if you know that you're friend is an 'enthusiast' and loves dropping the hammer. Better luck with your car.

Hey Pure Adrenaline,

I don't know if I would lend my car out to anyone ... except my bro (who drives like a girlie, even in his C32!) and another friend (who's out in Calgary right now). You are a good friend 'cause if it was anyone else ... I would tell them to check out Dollar Rent-A-Car or Enterprise. LOL.

yeah last fall I blew up my D series motor in the CRX at the last autocross event. at least it isn't my daily driver. I haven't had time or money to tear it down. maybe with tax return money I can do something with it.
I knew it was bad when i had it up around 8000 rpms i hear BOOM then oil pouring out of the motor. I'm like SHHHHHHHHHHHHHIIIIIIIIIT.

Oh, trust me, it took me like 20 minutes to decide to let him borrow the car.

Yes, he's an "enthusiast", but he's probably the only one besides my family that I would trust with my car. He's the only one who's run my car besides myself at the track. I know he would be responsible, and in fact, he said he achieved 28.4 mpg on the way to Chicago. Hell, the best I've ever achieved was in the high 27's, and that was coming back from the Toronto meet, all highway. So I know he's taking care of it.

Jen -- Screw the bus. You forget that I live in a fraternity house with 38 other guys. "Hey, give me a ride."

I get better gas mileage at 80mph on the highway than I do at 65, just so you know (:

I don't care if he goes 80 or 90. As long as he's careful on steep inclines/declines, potholes, etc., everything is peachy. In fact, I don't care if he floors it. I do that myself, anyway.

Bah, I already blew an O2 sensor again last week, so I think I've had my share of bad luck for now. Besides, my engine has no reason to blow up whatsoever.

I didn't mean to steal your thread but I was wondering... since you were on the discussion of motors being blown and rebuilt... I wanted to know if you thought that the markings on the bliock could be repaired..? Sorry for the big pic... Had trouble resizing....

Umm... I really am not sure. Never had to deal with that problem. Hopefully someone can chime in.
