Turbo Talk. Any Advice?

I'm done spending money on my Type-S for a bit. It's time to pay some attention to my Civic. I have started a savings account for a turbo kit. I should be ready to purchase by late summer. I've done some online research on turbo kits. The common theme is "you get what you pay for". I want something with great integrity, daily driveability and dependability. I don't need anything crazy. Just a little bit of extra yank. I've come to like the Greddy kit for the Civic. It runs about $1500 bucks and another $650 for the FMIC.

Is there anything else I should be looking at? Any advice from experienced turbo folk would be helpful.

Have to agree with CLPower. I would seek out any one of the B-series VTEC motors to build upon.

I can appreciate the bigger motor. But I really want to keep the factory type engine setup. Everyone that is interested in my Civic loves how stock-like it is.

Save the money you'd spend on a B series and build your current d16 motor. If you want to go real fast then opt for a hybrid swap.

I don't want to boost the hell outa my shit. I jest want a bit more yank in the seat upon throttle smashing. The Civic is already faster than my Type-S until around 80mph. You know?

depends on how long you want the motor to last?

you could spray if you don't give a damn about the stock engine.

personally i like S/C over turbos.

I'm not at all familiar with the motor you want to boost, but have a little experience in turbocharging. I've owned three Grand Nationals since 1986, including a modified car that ran low tens. I still own my original GN, but have left the motor close to factory.

Turbocharging appeals to me because of the ability to make horsepower without a parasitic power loss. I don't know what the kits you refer to include, but the turbocharger and intercooler are only part of the equation. Again, not being familiar with your engine, but I imagine you will need to upgrade your fuel system. This will include, but not limited to, the fuel pump and injectors. How about your ECM? This may need to be upgraded as well. Perhaps the biggest concern with turbocharging in detonation. Because of this most high horsepower turbo cars often have a lower compression ratio to allow the massive increase in air and fuel. An intercooler makes the compressed air cooler, in turn making it more dense, which also helps with detonation. Turbo lag is also a concern. I'm not sure you have ever experienced this, but lag is best described as the period of time for the turbo to spool up and the system compress. Because of this the plumbing for the turbo system should be kept to a minimum, and the turbo itself positioned as close to the engine as possible. A smaller turbo often spools up quicker but compresses less air than a larger one that has more noticeable lag but creates more power.

Again, sorry if this information is somewhat generic, but these are the questions I would concern myself with for any turbocharging application.

Terry

Terry.... Thank you for your feedback. The turbo kit includes the manifold, piping and ins own ECU management. GReddy says that the fuel system in my model Civic is enough to support the added boost. The turbo is fairly small, T3/T4. GReddy says that boost output is around 7 to 8 psi at full throttle. This seemed fine to me because I'm not looking for a miracle. Just a wee boost.

I've previously owned a 3000GT VR-4 which boosted 15psi and a Starion ESI-R which boosted 18psi. I'm definately not looking for the same amount of boost. Or the same amount problems . Mitsubishi owned me for about 4 years. Oy the repair bills.

I have a friend who just got done boosting his D16. Pretty quick car for the amount of cash invested. I am pretty sure he is running around 7 PSI for a daily uses.
