I don't think the CL would of sold nearly as much had there been something like the Z or the G available at the time. I mean, you should of seen how many people left their CL's for either when they first came out.

Yes the CL is more luxurious but that was a trade off I was willing to make in terms of performance. This car handles and "giddy yups" better than the CL would ever had. But again different cars for different purposes. In reality wish I could have kept the CL and had the Z. But since I could only have one, the Z was it for me.

Safety Car
I gave my parents my cls and got a 350z...for the touring edition the lux. items arent so bad...the leather seats are comfortable, the sound system is better than the cl system, and the heated seats are nice. Only think I kinda miss are mem. seats, but no major loss

I'm dying to get back into a RWD car, but I don't think I could handle the lack of trunk space on the 350Z (the G35c has a small trunk too).
I like to be able to put 8 bags of mulch from homedepot in the trunk... I've had 8 ft long 2x4's in the cls (thru the pass thru in the rear seat) too. Can't do that with a Z...
Now, if the deal was to keep the CLS and get a dedicated weekend sportscar, that would be another story.

Cl v 350z
I just purchased a 2001 CLS with 35k on the clock. My wife owns a G35 which is the 4 seat version of the 350Z. Right off the bat I am very dissapointed in the accelaration of the CL. It is only slightly faster than my 96 Maxima. The seating is so high I feel like I am driving an SUV.
The Infiniti is a much much better car. Dramatically faster and much more comfortable inside. Rides and handles better also.
That said I am stuck with the CL and need to make it work. The dealer suggested an injector and throttle body flush. It passes the diagnostic but something must be wrong. Seat of the pants feel tells me this is a 15.5 Qmile car. A far cry from the 14.8 Car & Driver pulled when they tested the automatic.
Any help here would be greatfully appreciated.

I was | | that close to buying a Z, but I opted for the 6-speed CLS for trunk space, four seater, and a decently better interior. Also, the time I bought the CLS, I got a pretty good deal. I see myself getting a s2000 in the near future though.
Oakroadsteve - maybe your actuator is not functioning (common issue), do a search and you will see what I am talking about.

My advice is that you should test drive cars before buying them.
Cant compare the CLS to a G35.. they arent even close in price range. Even with yours with 35k miles, im sure you got it for cheap compared to a Infiniti. In that sense its a bargain of a car. So enjoy the CLS.

I'd have to look back at the sales stats, but didn't the CL's expiry in 2003 get sharper in terms of monthly sales after the G came out? The G didn't much hurt 330Ci sales that I know of. The buyers were lured over to Infiniti moreso from Acura than from BMW.

Maybe. But I can say that in the two years I've been on the G35 boards, there are an awful lot of 330Ci of G35 coupe threads.
The CL fit a different coupe market than the 330 or G35. While there was certainly some loos here from the CL to Z/G revolution, I'd say it's probably not as much as others tht were sitting on the fence to buy a coupe, or came over from Germanland.

My theory was that the G was bought by people who said "who cares" about the BMW when the larger and faster Infiniti came out for less $. True, not everyone is so easily enticed away from BMW, but Infiniti's proposition was quite favorable for many.

Especially if I had the 6 speed MT, but even w/ the AT I'd still keep my CL.
Maybe for a G35, but not a 350Z.

I'd trade my CL-S for a 350z.
Drive it like my hair is on fire, turn around, sell the Z, get about 25k for it, buy a 6MT CL (have an AT right now) and pocket a couple of grand.
You can tell, I dig the CL mucho but come on, it's saying "I'll trade your 15k car for my 25k car." Who the hell would refuse that? And in the interim while the Z is listed and you're waiting for a good offer, you've got a kickass fun car.
