TL vs Evolution

Well ... tonight i was cruising along 152St in miami, and i see on my rearview mirror a silver car swirving through the traffic trying to catch me up.. As i see the car hauling ass towards me i start to accel a lil, finally the car came up besides me .. Nice Silver Evo,.. so there we were side by side... and nothing in front of us.. except a railroad crossing.. i felt like i was in Fast and Furious with the railroad n shit, jk.. So we both hit the gas pedal to the metal.. And i was VERY surprised.. the Evo didnt kick my ass as much as i thoguht ti would.. he was RIGHT in front of me.. my front bumper couldve hit the back of his car... until about 4th gear... he started getting a couple feet ahead of me... When we got to the stop light... he even admited to me that my car is Really nice and quick... not that i didnt know that already.. but i guess i surprised his ass...
Anyways just felt like i shouldve shared my story... i thought it was cool.. considering i can take an evo if i do a couple mods.. quick car.. but too bad i think they are the ugliest cars for its price...

the evo must have been driven by a rookie.. i think tl is a luxury but speed would not come close to an evo.. its one of the fastest stock car for under 30k.. fastest one would be suburu.. if driven by a good racer..

it may be a 2.0 liter four banger, but it has forced induction so that doesn't really matter. The evos have 271 hp, and 273 ft lbs, compared to the TL which has 270 hp and 238 ft lbs. There is no contest here in terms of performace, the evos is much faster.

I had a chance to get my toosh handed to me... Crusin on a straight stretch of Freeway bout 65 MPH i'd say, a new EVO pulls on my tail: wham we both hit it. I drop down to 3rd and i pull bout a half a car length in front of him then bye bye... he lit me up... conclusion: it is a four banger until that damn turbo hits. It was fun while it lasted. ( damn turbos )

off the line the evo would beat the TL because of 4wd, and that 273lb of torque sure helps lol. i raced a mach1 at the light which jus came from the track with numbers and drag radials. i didnt lose that bad, prob 1-2 car lengths. we got up to like 70 then we stopped.

I said this to someone else about the Subie WRX STi: You never had a chance with the Evo, don't even try. The one you raced, Zero, was driven by an inexperienced driver.

all the guy with an evo has to do is buy a $80 manual boost controller and he will be bus lenghts ahead of any tl. there is nothing easier to create more power on than a turbo car.

I've beaten an Evo in my TL, but I know the guy (kid) could not drive for shit, so I took advantage of him. Either the guy you raced could not drive for shit, or he wasn't racing and you thought he was.

I'd love to have an STI or Evo as a second car, just have to remove those damn wings. Remonds me of a grocery shopping cart.

the evo owns the tl. tl is fast...but not fast enough. he probably missed a shift into 3rd or something or else he should have been way in front of you

There's no way a TL can beat an Evo or STi. End of story.
I can live with that. If you can you better go buy a Z06.

My wife's WRX is 'only' 237 hp 4cyl, but she can smoke me off the start.

Unless she modded it slightly, her WRX has 227hp. That said, stock WRXs only seem to run mid 14s; th new Forrester Turbo can walk it. The STi is a different story, though.

Neuronbob is right on the money.

STOCK WRX only runs mid 14's? 5AT TL runs mid 14's! I thought even the stock WRX was faster than this...0-60 in 5.4 seconds doesn't usually equate to mid 14's...anyone have any speculation on this? The turbo could die down after awhile, but I don't know. My friend and I test drove a Saab 9 5 Aero and the turbo in that feels incredible! But after 5K rpms you have nothing...

I'm not going to naysay. I took a bunch of heat for expressing optimism in racing a WRX STI. I have a race lined up with a friend of a friend. I'm not saying I'll stay door-to-door with him, but I don't think he'll slaughter me too bad. I have CAI which is good for a little help, and a 6mt. Now, I don't have delusions of grandeur, thinking I'm going to beat him or anything, but I don't think a stock STI is going to murder me.

When I said that in a previous post, which was originally about the TL vs. 350Z, I was told by a G35 Coupe owner that he could hang with an STI, but that I'd be destroyed. Not three days later, I managed to run into a 350Z with 2 guys (I was alone, and I'm acknowledging that help...), and we got one good run of 3, where we both hit it even, in 3rd gear on the highway. I inched, ever so slowly and pulled about a half or 3/4 car on him to about 95. Before that, I had everyone and their mother telling me that the 350Z was eons out of my league, and there I am hanging with him (I know he would have pulled if he wouldn't have had the passenger, but not by much!). So, I buy your story, man. If my lightly modded 6mt can hang with a 350Z (not from the line, I know!), I don't see an Evo or STI absolutely destroying it. Just look at the mph in the 1/4 mile for the Evo and the TL. They aren't that far off. You can account for the time difference by the AWD, but if the Evo or STI were way faster, they'd be crushing the TL's mph as well, and they aren't.

Hey, you get a car with great performance and no luxury or you get a car with lots a luxury and good performance. The evo doesn't have crap for luxury, or as far as I could tell.

The EVO and STI interiors are not even close to what is offered in the TL! I would gladly trade a bit of speed for this interior....but then you already knew that as we are not posting on rally-car-racerboy forums

No offense, but if your friend is a half decent driver in the STi then you will be murdered from launch. In a drag race, the STi should run a mid 13 second quarter mile, while you will probably run a high 14. The STi will probably win by around 10 to 15 car lengths (an Evo would be similar, maybe 8 to 12 car lengths). And this is just in a straight line race...don't even think about a road course or racing an STi/Evo in the curves, it would be much worse. Again, no offense, just some realistic input.

That's OK, though, it's still fun to race to see how our cars stack up with friends, so give it a whirl! Besides, our TLs still win the dollar/value/features ratio easily.

Base WRXs are good for mid 5s but loose steam relatively quick. They typically run bet. 14.3-14.5 with 94mph traps, stock. (This is in much the same vane as the 9-5 Aero; ironically, the 9-2X = WRX Wagon) By comparison, the TL 6MT runs similar times (maybe a bit quicker) but several mph faster in the traps.

The 5AT TL (low 6 0-60/mid-upper 14s ETs) will run a little behind the stock WRX at first but ultimately blow past it.

Hmm, I have both and even when my Evo was stock I would absolutely DESTROY the TL-S from any speed. Now, its even more digusting with the few mods I have

Doh! For some reason I have trouble conveying that I am not planning on racing from the line. Or, I might go from the line (just for fun), but my real interest is in a rolling 1st or (more realistically) 2nd gear punch, and then a highway, 3rd gear race. I'll do it from the line as well (for grins), but I by no means have the audacity to think I'll hang from a launch with an AWD.

BUT...

I think given Motor Trend hit 99mph in a stock TL in the 1/4 mile, as opposed to 104 & 105 for the STI and Evo respectively, a stock TL obviously is in the same league as far as actual power(to the ground):weight ratio. In my experience, a good launch, which the two AWD cars in question here have, is going to improve your trap speed somewhat, or I suppose you could say that having FWD is going to rob you of some trap speed. If you are running faster at 60', you are going to be running faster at the end of the 1/4 mile. Because of this factor, I'm assuming that a TL running 99 in the 1/4 mile wouldn't be crushed by more than a few car lengths in a 50mph roll-on in 2nd gear. Add to that my 10 or 12 WHP from the CAI, and I'm hoping to be a thorn in the STI's side, and hang within a couple of cars from 50 to 90. I have run a good friend's LT1 Firebird, which ran 102 or 103 in the 1/4 (with headers and a CAI, and drag radials he was running 13.40's @ 102 or 103), and the faster we start out, the closer I can hang. On the highway in 3rd at about 65, he only pulled a car and a half on me to 90. Granted, off the line, he'd tear me in half.

Anyhow, I'll post once I get the chance to run the STI on the go.
