TL-S vs I-35

My brother is considering buying a new Infiniti I-35 this weekend. He mentioned he's concerned about the car holding it's value, and I chimed in about the TL-S. I might be biased since I love Honda products and feel so-so about Nissan. I told him out the door with a few options thrown in for good measure(traction control, Navi, etc.) the TL-S is hand down a better value. I also believe the TL-S will hold it's value better than the I-35.

Is there a fan website for the I-35 similiar to this one? I think my bro' should check out any info he can get on the I-35 and test drive a TL-S before he buys. I know most of us are biased but what are your thoughts about the two cars?

I think the G35 is more comparable to the TLS then the I35. I don't think the I35 is that popular, so I'm not sure as to what kind of future it has ahead of it. I'm sure it's a nice car... but I'd go with the G35 over the I35.....

Re: TL-S vs I-35

I get most of my Nissan news from www.freshalloy.com they have Infiniti forums there.

Edmunds did an comparison review earlier this year -

IMHO, you can't go wrong with either. It really depends on what your brother is looking for; a test drive of each should be enough.

An I-35 is just a gussied up Maxima....go with the G35, it's all new and much better looking, IMO.

He would love to get the G35, problem is he doesn't want to pay sticker+. There's a little one on the way, so he's got to stay within his budget. Probaly why I don't have kids-I couldn't afford my "toys".

Get the TLS. Only thing about it is the tranny so maybe an extended warranty would be good. If you can get the I35 cheaper than the TLS, I'd go with the I-35. Infiniti dealerships are the second best around (behind lexus). They really go out of their way to help you!

Despite me being a huge Acura fan and currently owning 3 (including a TL), I say the I35. Reasons are, not everybody and their mother has one, they are heavily discounted, nicer desgn, better quality interior (plastics/leather etc.) and IMO the Infiniti name is just a tad bit more statusy than Acura (Don't bash me). But they both are great cars and I hear that the I35 may not be dumped afterall and it might just stay to compete with the entry level front drive luxo cars (ES300, TL), while the G35 competes with IS, 3, C, A4 etc. Hey if Lexus can pull off having the ES,GS,ES similarly priced so can Infiniti.

And to tmk70 who said "An I-35 is just a gussied up Maxima," well the TL is just a gussied up Accord and looks like it too!

Although the TL does have the "Honda look" to it, the TL's engine (and especially the Type S) is far superior to the V6 accord. The I35 is EXACTLY the same car as the Maxima, just equipped with more accoutrements and an inflated price tag.

I think it could be brought up to 275-280 pretty easily at the factory.

If you read at the bottom, they say you can compare it to a ES300, C320, 330, and a Jag X-Type....notice something? No Acura?? Hmmm, and I would think if its in the same class comparison as the ES300, wouldn't you include the TL/TL-S too? Just a thought.

Nah, that's nothing. For some reason Acura is left out all the time in those kind of comparos. I feel there are to categories in the entry luxo market: Rear drive sporty/luxo and front drive luxo.

The hell are you smoking? Acura CL/TL interior is a hundred-fold better than the sparse, boring, cheap-looking Nissan/Infinity interiors.

The I35 will be phased out in the next 2 years. So I would not buy it.

That is why they have the G35 out. The G35, M45 and Q45 will be the 3 sedans for Infiniti for the future.

The I35 is a great value especially with this new engine so it would not be a mistake to buy the car other than the fact that it would lose some of its value after the phase-out.

But then again, this TLS, as we know it today, will be substituted very soon by the new generation of TL cars. And there is no info about that car available at all.

If I were out in the market for a luxury sedan right now, I would wait for about 3-6 months and then get the G35. 6 months from now, supply should be enough to cover demand for a somewhat negotiated with an Infiniti dealer.

That may not be true. Lexus has the exact same product line (sedans) and the ES300 and IS300 do just fine together, just like the I35 and G35 will. They are similar, but different markets and I believe Infiniti has plans to stay in both with the next gen. maxima dubbed I35 sedan.

I've driven my brother's 2000 I30 and it's a nice classy looking car, the I35 is even better. I might even go so far as to say that the I35 has a richer look (at least on the outside).

Now with that said, the Acura is a far better value hands down, and you have the typical Honda quality. I do agree with those who say that the Hondas tend to hold their value better. I've owned two Pathfinders and at trade-in time, I was disappointed at the book value. Trade-in might be a bit better for the Infiniti, but then again, you paid more.

Either way, they're both nice cars.

I mean no offense to Infiniti owners, but while Lexus is #1 period as well as selling over 220k cars a year, Infiniti has yet to come close to 100k.

THe ES 300 while slow is popular with buyers so Lexus can HAVE 2 models at 35k, especially since the IS 300 is rather extreme to it. Buyers KNOW the difference

The I-30/35 is a ? to buyers and if u notice in the new Infiniti ads, IT IS NOT INCLUDED. Buyers think Infiniti and ? comes to mind.

G35 is both luxury and sporty, it WILL replace the I35.

The G35! It's streched him financially, but I think he made the right decision. Test drove it friday night, man is that car fast! Good looking, too-except for the interior-it's so,so. Not sure but the G35 may be faster that the CL-S. Don't like the manumatic in this car, it think it is much more inferior to the CL-S.

The I35 is being phased out. It already is set to be final as 2003 model year. The Maxima is going full-size in its new design and Infinity is dropping the I35 all together.
