TL-S vs. 330Ci (conv't)
I got out of the gym and I see this mid-30's guy get into his sharp '01/'02 (don't know the difference) 330Ci convertible. We ended up taking the same route back home for a while, and I kept spotting him in my rearview -- there was too much after-work traffic to play around. I've had this "itch" since seeing the F&F (fast & the furious) to mess around w/ the TL-S.
He ends up taking a right turn at a street about ten minutes later, I kept going straight. About three minutes later, we end up lined up at a red light on 75th Street in Naperville. It's a perfectly level, gunshot road where I previously played around w/ a C36 (except heading east last time). He's got Nine Inch Nails blasting through his sound system, I've got the cheesy radio (no good CD's .. gotta go burn some hehehe). I figure, it's not worth it NOT to try and race him, even if he decides not to play.
Green. I hit it, so does he. He gets out about four feet ahead of me while I peel out, and after that --- dead even to 50, as soon as I get through 2nd, about 75... I'm closing in -- I can hear him shifting, so I figure it's a manual, and after we're literally DEAD-EVEN, it's about 102 mph, and I pull off, he keeps going until he slows for the traffic ahead. Eventually (ten seconds later) I pull up next to him, and we give each other the thumbs up, and I continue straight on 75th and he takes a right at Modaff Rd. Best part of my week just happened!
One thing is for sure, I realize this now -- had he hadn't had the extra weight of the convertible, and had he launch harder (he didn't even peel out -- at least, I didn't hear it) -- he would have had me by about 1/2 carlength the whole way, if not a little more. Those cars are DAMN quick! Awwww, my wittle TL-S needs a bathy wathy now!
Much respect to the Beemers!

He probably left the traction control (DSC) on which is why you didn't hear him peel-out. If he launced hard enough and DSC kicked in, that would've slowed his launch down as well. Did you floor your TL-S or ease into your launch?

yeah, one thing u gotta remember is that bmw's DSC is absolutely amazing, it has virtually no slipping when engaged. i see this time and time again with my friends '00 323. if i slam on the gas, i'll stand there peeling out while he slowly goes ahead... the best thing to do is to disable ur own VSA and brake torque, this way u'll have a much better launch and won't need to worry about VSA slowing u down.

I didn't ease into my launch by any means -- I anticipated green and was WOT by the time it changed to "go!" He did have a better rxn time, nonetheless -- I peeled out pretty significantly.
Like I said, it was neck-and-neck, a 1/2 carlength lead at best on his part. Had we gone again, I'm sure it may have gone the other way, and then v.v. if we went a third time. The convertible probably does the same to that car that it does to the new M3 --> 0-60mph in 5.5 seconds instead of 4.9 in the '01 M3 convertible. Plus, as I also mentioned, he didn't drop clutch.
As far as brake-torquing -- I'm going to refrain from doing that to my TL-S -- I want this car to run a good 60 to 70,000 miles trouble-free, I don't want tranny problems due to my ego-trips behind the wheels. A manual tranny can run harder than an automatic (most of the time) anyday -- so I'll leave the back-to-back racing to my boy in the 330Ci! hehehe
