Question TL or Legend

I have a 97 2.2CL, but want something bigger and I totally neglected its 4 door counterparts. I see a lot of 94-95 Legends and 96-98 TL's for sale at around the same price. Only difference is with the Legends' mileage, they are all over 100k. If you had to choose between the 2, which would u choose. I always liked the Legend and there are alot out there in pretty good condition. I like the TL because its newer, but the body style isnt as nice as the Legend IMO. For those of you that have the 1st gen TL, are there any tranny issues with the autos? I was originally looking at Jettas and Passats, but they are kinda small and still expensive. Please post your opinions.

Thanks.

I like the 94-95 Legends. I was in the same boat till I ended up finding a great deal on an 01 CL which is what I originally wanted in the first place. Just make sure the timing belt has been replaced. But I would definitly get the Legend over the 96-98 TL's anyday!

No tranny problems here. *knock on wood* I do have to agree with the Legend looking better than the TL, but considering its age, the TL would be the best way to go. You can squeeze more mileage out of it. As with your CL, if you get a '95 2.5TL or '96-'97 TL, you'll be entitled to the free emissions warranty up to 14 years or 150k miles. If you have any more questions, go to the 1st gen TL forum and read the sticky "Common Problems on the 1st Gen" and learn more about the problems you may be having if you get a 1st gen. But I can assure you, no tranny problems.

I would have gotten a 94-95 Legend GS but.. those are tough to find. I "settled" by getting a TL but I've been happy with it.

As for issues.. the only non-emission warranty items to worry about:

Starter
Timing belt

The trannies are reliable and last well past 200,000 miles on average.

Yes it is.

It has 230 hp, power tilt AND telescope steering and 2 position seat memory. In addition it comes with much sought after wheels (16 inch) and has sportier suspension.

Similar, but with 200 hp. I dont think it has the power telescope/seat memory or traction control.

But it has a good stereo, leather (with heated front seats) auto climate control etc.

Oh and the main reason the GS is tough to find.. it had an optional SIX speed manual.

They look so nice in white. This guy I know is selling a 92 sedan in white with navy blue leather, but the interior is a mess and the outside is immaculate. If the interior was nice, I would have jumped on it. He only wants 2500 for it.

You can get the interior made immaculate for about $1000

Assuming its mechanically fine, I would have gone for that.

He still has it. But I need to get rid of the CL first. Do they make alot of aftermarket parts for the Legend/TL?

Not really. The aftermarket is far more friendly to the J series CL/TL than the Legend and 1st gen TL.

You're basically stuck with getting a cold air intake, exhaust and a few rare ECU mods.

I like the Legend but it is too old and in other posts I've heard it is expensive to maintain. Hearsay maybe but 95 is too old either way.

I'm not a huge 1st gen TL fan but it is newer. Is tehre a criteria?

I love the legends. I wanted a coupe a few years back but the dealer was trying to rob me, so then I went to get a GS and a different dealer tried to rob me so I said f&^% it and got a Accord instead. Get the legend and do this to it..

Criteria is 4 door, around 6-7K, clean interior and easy to maintain. Not going to be modded, most likely just a family transporter. 5spd isnt out of the question either.

Found a 95 GS sedan auto for under 10K. More than I wanna spend, but it is real clean and under 100k on the clock.

That 95 GS sounds like a sweet deal. Can you trade in the CL for it?

What about an I30 or ES300. Pretty darn reliable and are in that range for 96-98.

Thats about the right price for a GS with that mileage.

I remember not too long ago it seemed like the 1st generation TL section of the forun god a few new members who all got great deals on their cars.

In that range, a first gen TL is definately easy to find. I got mine for ~$6,000, have done some basic maintaing myself (documenthing everything for the sake of the forums) and so far it has been great to me.
