Tires - Where to buy them??

I am planning to buy tires soon. I was wondering what the best place you think it is to buy them.
I am looking for the best price, installed and out the door. I don't really know how tirerack works, so a little insight information would be appreciated. I haven't decided on the brand or wether I will buy a wheel/tire combo (may get the rims from fleabay). At this time I am looking for a winter package..

I've been shopping around for tires for the last 2 weeks and the best deals keep coming back to tirerack. I will probably be ordering a set pretty soon.

I made a B+M store (Discount Tire) beat a TireRack.com price two months ago... Pretty sweet.

NEVER pay full retail price for tires or the extended service plan on them...

I saved $100/tire with tire rack over what I was quoted locally for the same tire.

I don't think I would ever buy tires locally....too much of a markup.

I was able to buy tires online and pay a local shop to mount them and that was still cheaper than local shop cost of the tires with free mounting!

last time I went to america's tire co/discount tire and took the tire rack price and I think they match any other price. But usually after paying for mounting and balancing, the prices weren't too far off, but I saved a little bit of money.

if I didn't need a special high performance tire, or a non-stock size, I think I'd just pick up some michilins at costco. I've always been happy with michilins, and costco makes it pretty hassle free. But I think they'll only do stock tire sizes

no tax & free shipping to your door. ordered from them many times. and like others said, just bring it to a shop to install, still will be cheaper

Free Mounting you say....

All their "free" services are worked into the price of the tires along with their huge markups.

I only purchase tires online and normally its tirerack, but once from discount tire. Whats nice about tire rack is that my local shop is an authorized installer so they give special tire rack install prices when you buy the tires from tire rack.

Last 2 sets have come from Tire Rack. Previously, I bought them at a local shop or chain like STS.

I voted Other...get a quote from TireRack and take it to a local Discount Tire. The last set I bought I got from Edge Racing and had installed locally...big pain. It's much easier to get a local store to price match.

Lots of independent shops will match tirerack's pricing and offer free install. I prefer that.

Interestingly, I tried to do that with my local shop, but they didn't want to match the price, but said they'd install them for me if I bought from Tire Rack. So that's what I do now.

I'm sure it is different now, but the shop I used to work for would just give the customer their price on the tires - sometimes it was lower than tire rack, other times it was higher. If the shop is smart they will be willing to work with you.

If not, just buy and bring the tires to them like you are doing. Easy enough.

When I got my bridgestones the shop matched the price, free install and also gave me a 50 dollar gas card. Worked out pretty well.

ended up costing me about $700 AFTER a $50 coupon.

$140ish for each tire plus fees, the certificate for free replacement, etc.

i guess tirerack doesn't sell that tire because i didn't see it on their site.

Hmm, I'm gonna need new tires soon so i just checked tirerack and the only set of tires they have in my size (225/45R19 front - 245/40R19 rear) are the OEM Bridgestone RE090's at $250/$280!! Wtf! I thought tirerack was supposed to have this overwhelming selection of tires so how come they only have ONE tire in stock in this size??? I was hoping to find something in the $150+ range....

Discount tire, we have plenty of these stores in the Atlanta area. TireRack has the cheaper tires, but the shipping brings it to the same price as Discount Tire. Discount tire has great service and you can get them to lower the price easy. Also, I can actually meet face to face with the guy who is selling me the tires, with TireRack you can't do that nor can you negotiate a price.

Those are made specifically for Discount Tire, kind of like how Goodyear makes the Weatherhandler only for Sears.

I've got a set of 16" YK520s. I've been trying ruthlessly to kill them for 1.5 years, but they refuse to die. In my defense, they've tried to get me back several times but I've managed to catch the slide all but twice (and in those cases, I was fortunate to land shiny side up in a gravel pit and not into the mountain or off the side). On on a more positive note, they're much softer than Hankook K104s, they lose traction progressively, and they seem to be wearing very evenly (~20k miles, about 4/32" left). Gas mileage has been good too. Just not quite what I was looking for.

On a tangent, won't I save on sales tax (vs Discount Tire) if I buy from Tirerack?
