Tire size question

I'm throwing my self at the mercy of..... Oh, never mind that rubbish.

Bought new tires for my wife's 2001 Honda Odyssey minivan. The size on the van is 215/60-16, but my dumbass ordered a touch smaller at 205/60-16. Will running with these really make a big difference?

I know about the speedometer being about 1.8% off, but that's not really a concern. It's the slightly thinner profile I am worrying about.

Oh, and it's on steel wheels, +55 offset. Here's a pic with the old tires and wheels for reference (the JDM model is a bit different than the US models)

Any chance to return them for the correct size?

the sidewall is about .2 inches shorter, so .4 inches in diameter than the factory tires. Did you go to a local tire place? If yes, sometimes they will go up or down a size to help save some money.

I suggest you call them and tell them that the car has 205/60/16 when the sticker says 215/60/16. Tell them you want to know why the wrong size was ordered/put on!

The new tire should be fine if the new tire's load rating is the same as the old one-- there shouldn't be any significant difference in ABS operation, traction control, etc.

You can also register on Odyclub.com (Odyssey forum) to avoid the insults here, BTW.

I'm used to the folks here...... And I'll look at the Ody Club website as suggested.

As far as a return, they were ordered from the Tire Rack. They ship overseas, and returning them is a big pain in the ass .

So I'll probably just put them up for sale on a local website that goes bonkers for new stuff, and get the right size.

Thanks to the three answers out of 85 views (you know who you are).

I took a look at the load ratings. The old tire was a 95H (~1500 lbs) and the new ones are 91T (~1350 lbs). With a GVW of 3500 lbs, I still should not come close to exceeding the limit of the tires. And it never gets driven above 100 Km/h (62 mph).

So given that I could add 1500 lbs in weight and still be under, do you guys think it matters, or just sell them and get the proper ones? The Honda Manual calls out 215/60-15 95H.

Just a question, and no flames, please.

Yeah, if the manual calls for 95, I think you need get tires with the proper load rating. When sitting still, 150lb differences doesn't seem like much, but they gotta absorb additional impact from road irregularities. You may get bubbles on the sidewall and end up replacing them prematurely.

If it's not too much of a pain to sell them, I'd do that then get get the right ones. I'd sleep better knowing I had the right tire on the vehicle. Although in reality it probably won't matter at all.

Our '04 Odyssey came with 98T tires, and the US '01s came with 96T load ratings.

We went down to 97Vs for a specific tire (yeah, I know I'm not going the Ody at 130+ mph. ), but I would really hesitate to go more than one letter grade down on the load ratings.

Depending on the condition of the roads where you live, you may or may not have a problem with running a tire with a lower load index but I would venture a guess that most manufactures use load ratings that are over and beyond the vehicle requirements for comfort.
