Tint

Hi,
I've seen pics of cars and a lot of them have x% tint, what exactly does the numbers mean for the tint? (sorry, i don't know too much about cars, still learning tho). Whats the darkest that you can tint so that it is still street legal. I live in California if that matters, preferably i would like to have it street legal in all states. Is it different from state to state>??

The number stands for how much percentage of light transmits through the film.

The HIGHER the number, the LIGHTER the tint is.
70% is almost clear while 5% is just about BLACK.

The most common percentages are: 70, 50, 35, 20 & 5

The laws are different in every state. I think California doesn’t allow ANY tint on the front side windows.
Many states allow 35% max while a few allow 20%.

There’s a website that lists all the laws.
I’m sure someone will post it here for you.

Tint shops should be able to tell you what's legal and what's not. In CA, the front windows has to be, at least, 70%. Not sure of the back and rear. Do an internet search under tint laws by state.

I have a good site for you that I'll post when I get home. It tells you all the state laws and has a tint demo thing that tells you whats legal as well. Unfortunately the link is on my home comp and I'm at work.

I think the only universal tint is 35% on the rear windows, like trucks and vans have stock.
