'18 GTI gets the bigger infotainment & refreshed exterior. The small screen in the '17 R is a bit of a let down after driving a few '18s.
Will have to see if I can get a drive in the FoRS, just to be sure, given the DD ride comfort issues I've seen from a few responses.

Finally got to go see the car last night. I've always despised used car dealers/dealers in general & these guys continued this trend. They were nice enough but the more they talked, the worse it was..

- no test drive without a bill of sale signed w/ a test drive as a final assessment. How are you suppose to make an offer without driving the car? lol

- Sales guy takes us for a ride (another guy interested happened to show up at the same time, convenient?) Either way, car rips and feels great.. as a passenger.

- "Meticulously mantained". Car proof shows services have been done throughout the years but doesn't list said services.

- Sales guy says carbon clean has been done & sales manager later says they'll do the service in house for buyer. Get your stories straight.

- Sales guy knew NOTHING about the car.

Me: "Do the Bolsters on the seats tighten up when S mode is activated?"

Sales guy: "S mode?, Bolsters?"

Couldn't make this up & the bolsters didn't work but the flaps in the exhaust worked.

- Car had a claim in 09' for $4500. Passenger door was resprayed & clear was pealing at the bottom.

Sales guy: Yea it's only the clear coat.

- Car looked straight till I got the hawk eye going and the door gaps were off on either side. Maybe it could be as easy as adjusting the door striker from the repair but who knows.

- Won't negotiate price, LOTS of interest.

To say it was dissapointing would be an understatement & the fact they did ZERO research on the car didn't help either. Before I headed out another RS4 showed up, he wanted a black one over his silver. Talked to him a bit and he raves about the car. Wasn't impressed he drove over an hour to not be able to drive the car.

Overall the car was great but the little things added up and a BS service history was the icing on the cake.

The hunt continues.

 

Trust me, I wish. Cheapest one is north of $35K & is a coupe. Coupe's are hit or miss for me.

Would have to be a S. A really nice one was posted earlier this week for $29K & was gone in a day.

 

Well here's the thing... A used car lot sells a shit ton of different vehicles. I don't think it's unusual for the sales team to not know everything about a particular car. Sometimes it's on their lot for less then two weeks... Why would someone sit there and research the seat bolsters?

A few friends over the years worked as sales people for various brands... They didn't know shit about their own product. They treated it like a job and little more- they weren't exactly passionate about cars... At least not like me. A friend worked at Nissan and I knew more about their cars than he did... And he was there every day selling them!

Either way, yup, sounds like a piece of shit.. I'm guessing that's the 28k RS4 you looked at? So is it time to see the 2015 S4 yet?

I get that but at the same time, they didn't know it even had an S mode. You'd think it would be helpful to have some knowledge except that it had a V8.

There's a nice one in Quebec (potentially sketch) but buddy refuses to sell the car to anyone outside of Quebec.

May have to go newer.

Although German parts are more expensive, the cars are intuitively put together and come apart and go back together very solidly.
I wouldn't shy away from it and the S4 and the CTS-V were on my list of upgrades at the time too...what held me back is the S4 looked less aggressive
and just like a somewhat beefier A4. The V being a wagon put me over the top. If I had been not married I would have gone 6MT also although the deal
would have been S2000 goes if I did that so I still think I made the right decision. I thought the B6 and B7 were scary due to timing chain tensioner bearing
or something going bad and needing to pull engine entirely to replace things...to the tune of $4000 DIY or $8000 to a shop. I don't know, read that somewhere
when I was seriously considering this one Grey 2006 S4 Avant 6MT for $10K (US)...still kinda wish I had taken the chance on that but I felt like if I were
gonna have a wagon with shitty gas mileage it might as well be the V with double the horsepower and more mystique.

Anyway, solid choices and you have other cars to drive in the meantime...just don't get tunnel vision and make a rash decision just yet...search for what you want
and don't pick the local low hanging fruit, even if that means finding a 6MT V Sedan in the States and importing (not sure what's involved). That said, if I found a
Volcano Red B8.5 S4 with a 6MT I would probably fuck shit up and give up one or more of my fleet for it.

^On that note, importing a car from Canada to the US really wasn't that hard. I can't imagine it being more complicated in reverse... All I had to show was a letter that the car met all DOT and safety standard in the US, pay some taxes based on the vehicle's final assembly location and boom I was done. Look into it!

It's a bit different if you go from the US to Canada. In Canada, it is a requirement by law to have daytime running lights. This isn't the case in the US. As such, the car coming into Canada then wouldn't meet the required safety standards.

It's not the end of the world, though. There are options- you can source Canadian market headlights/harnesses, or add in the DRLs into the existing headlight... I believe they are something like 10-15% of the light output from the high beams, or something. There must be a way to wire it in and make it match oem standards.

Good to know. I remember about 7 or 8 years ago, my boss was looking to import some sort of Infiniti SUV, or a VW SUV, and neither had DRLs... he ended up scrapping that idea because he didn't want to go through the effort of getting it done... though I honestly can't imagine it being that difficult to do so.

I didn't know it's common place for DRLs to be added into American-sold cars these days... all these companies are about saving every nickel and dime, so I'm surprised they'd install parts that aren't required by law. But maybe that in itself is a cost savings in not having to develop a DRL-less system instead. I dunno. Interesting though!

 

They're mostly LED DRLs, so probably fairly easy and cheap to manufacture. Plus (in white/bright color) they look good, too. Gives it that modern look, and it does really help daytime visibility of the car.

 

It's probably the same cost or cheaper for them to manufacture all the headlight units the same with DRL vs maintain two different part numbers.

 

I was thinking about it... It should still be the same headlight. It's just a change to the wire harness. The DRLs rely on the high beam bulb for the light. But either way...

 

Yeah, and at that point you might as well just leave it consistent. Change to the wiring harness brings the same issues for cost.

 

Unless it's a Ford & you can use ForScan to change the code to the CA type DRL

 

You didn't say if you are selling both the TL and the RL or the TL will continue to serve as the beater?

If you have TL as beater, then the RS4 is a solid choice.
If the RS4 is going to be your only car... then i dont know man....

 

RS4 as a daily if work and home are within walking distance of a GO station

Looked at a couple RS4's and haven't found "the one". Each of them have rubbed me the wrong way in some way, not gonna settle, that's for sure.

Any of the CTS-V guys able to shed some light on what to look out for with these cars? Car seems a bit cheap for the KMs..
