I just read an article in the newest Road & Track where they put the Mazdaspeed 3 up against the new WRX and Ralliart Lancer. It kicked both their butts and hasn't lost a comparison yet. If I had to go with a new car under 30 grand I'd probably look very very hard at the MS3.

Here is a thread about the three way shoot out. https://acurazine.com/forums/car-talk-5/2008-mazdaspeed-3-vs-2008-subaru-impreza-wrx-vs-2009-mitsubishi-lancer-ralliart-395451/
Some of the members make direct comparisons between their cars and the MS3.

I have no experience with them but I am very interested in the speed3 as my next car. Turbo 4, MT, good suspension, nice interior. The only thing I am worried about is fwd.

Do you really need the SPEED 3? Why not just the regular 3? Better gas mileage, and pretty practical and reliable. My friend has a SPEED 3 and I just think that it is a little bit of a waste, but what can I say I just bought an LT1 FC.

she has an 06 civic in good shape, so theres no point for her to get a regular mazda 3.
The speed3 is impressive and it has great suspension LSD etc...
zeroday, shes happy with her car but i told her i'd pay the extra 100$ a month its gonna end up costing. Her civic has no AC unfortunately so shes willing to get a new car and i got the itch pretty bad

I'm pretty sure SI gets better gas mileage and handles about the same.
Do you really think your gf's going to fully utilize all of those power and handling capabilities on streets? You sound like you are buying a new car..
If I were you, I'd recommend her something more safe than fast. my

If it was me i'd go with the Civic Si. yes you get more hp but i'd still take the Si over the speed 3.
another fun car to look at: Mini Cooper S with John Cooper works on it.
it's like 30 grand but cool car.

I could tell from the get-go that this car was really more about you and your wants than what she might want. If she's interested in it too, that's awesome --- it's supposed to be a fun car! But, if it's just that YOU want a MS3 and are just trying to talk her into it, why don't you trade in your vehicle and get one; let the GF get what she wants AND can afford.
No offense, but unless you two end up marrying, at some point down the line (like most relationships), you'll end up gone and she'll be stuck with the "extra $100 per month" that said you're willing to pay for her now so she can afford the MS3 (Post #14). IMO, don't mix finances unless you are engaged or married.....but that would be more of a bad decision on her part, since she's the one who can't afford a Speed3 on her own and would be stuck with the bill if/once you're gone.

spirit, the gf and I have been together for 4 years now. We live together and share expenses (me paying the majority of the bills).
Totally understand where ur coming from on the who wants what aspect. As far as what she wants, she doesn't have AC in her car, so she has expressed a desire to get a new car for that main reason. Plus she does like the ms3, although, yes, it is primarily I who wants a new car in our little love nest.

Then get the mazdaspeed3.
Has she mentioned what car she wants though? Or just that it needs AC?
The mazdaspeed has AC so you ARE getting what she wants.

I'm swapping back in the stock struts and springs and then selling/trading in my Speed3 soon.
I really like the car a lot, I would definitely recommend it.
I just have the Audi itch and since an A5 isn't gonna happen, I'm trying to scratch it with something else
