tested m3 smg
well i am considerin a new car and i went to the bmw dealership and there was a 02 smg with 8K on it. fully loaded, retail new was in the high 50K. this thing was amazing, preformance was rediclous, handling amazing, hit 110 into 3rd gear. One complaiint is the smg is so confusing, it took the sales guy and myself 20 minutes to fully figure it out. very nice, anyone have one, what do u all think of this car, who has driving one

My mom has an 03 Bmw M3 SMG Convertible, and yes the SMG is confusing but once you figure it out and get the hang of it, the car is a power monster. When my tranny went I got to drive it since I am not 25 and can not drive the Acura loaner and it was an amazing week. In short it is an amazing car. We have never had any problems with it, and the only service that has been performed is regular oli changes and trire rotation/balancing. If you are thinking about one I would go for it. I cant think of any other car that i have driven except the RS4 that comes close to the power and luxury of the BMW. Also dont waste your money upgrading to the HK sound system. It is the only think I am disappointed with in the Bimmer, my stock Bose system on my 1st gen sounded way better than the upgraded HK.

I haven never driven one but a friend ownes one i have ridden a few times. The seats are by far the most supportive seats ever, the stereo is bad (he had blown one of the speakers after only a few months). Its fast, scary fast and smooth as glass at triple digit speeds. One thing you would want to figure out is the launch control which is a great feature. Any way what did they have it listed at?

Isn't the SMG just like SS...the only difference is that you have to downshift all the way when you stop unlike SS, where the computer will automatically do it for you?

The SMGII is very nice, comfortable for the daily commutes and fast enough to hang w/ the best race car driver's when shifting. However, as w/ every technology, newer and better ones are always around the corner.
For example, take Audi's DSG (Direct Shift Gearbox) for example. While SMG's quickest shifts occurs at 80ms, the DSG can perform such feat in under 20ms. This is made possible w/ a double clutch design, along with computer that predicts an upshift or downshift by driver's throttle behaviors.
I have the SMGII in my M3 and I love it. However, 2 weeks ago I went for a test drive in the Honda S2000 (for shitz and giggles). The S2000 reminded me of how much fun a MT can be. My next car will probably be MT again, I truely miss it.

Three Wheelin'
When I was at the NY Auto Show I was thinking of getting that model, I like how it has the 6 different Modes for the SMG. Not sure if I would want the Coupe or Convertable. ?
How well do they baffle the outside noise on the convertable when it is raining or windy ? ? ?

Careful w/ the convertable M3s. Many people have complained about squeeks and creeks w/ the car. Try search for the problem in www.m3forum.com , you'll find more details.
Go w/ the coupe, the top doesn't squeek or leak, plus the car is lighter and performs better.
