Fraud.
But I would be happier, if they really just kept it.

Since they were originally supposed to destroy the car, then it was changed to ruin the engine, I bet over half of these will be back on the road. Some cars dealers I doubt even tried to get a refund from the gov if they could sell the car w/ engine for more than $3000. Others that did it correctly can just put a new block in a spare engine and resell it again. I don't think the states flag the VIN's on these do they?
"In order to receive federal reimbursement for the subsidy consumers get for trading in their cars, dealers must first destroy the engine. One common method is to drain the car's oil and flood the engine with sodium silicate, or liquid glass. Dealers then turn the car on and rev the engine to let the solution harden. In just a few minutes, the car becomes inoperable. (Read "How Bad Are Auto Sales? 10 Questions and Answers.")
Once the engine is dead, a recycling lot can take possession of the car. From that time, it has 180 days to sell the pieces of the car that retain some value. Even though the engine's a lost cause, everything from the scrap metal to the hubcaps is available to buyers. When the resale period is up, any leftover parts must be destroyed, and the government is notified that the car is gone for good.
No party involved thinks the process is perfect. Just a week into the program, the National Association of Auto Dealers (NADA) lobbied successfully to tweak the rules. Dealers, who were originally forced to dismantle the cars before receiving the government's check, can now hold on to cars until they get the money, so long as they ruin the car's engine within seven days. The NADA says it's happy with the Obama Administration's response to its concerns and says the latest changes significantly reduce the risk to dealers, who aren't saddled with a dead engine if a car is rejected for reimbursement."

I was checking a list released my Cars.gov and there were few 2001-2003 MDX's and some 1st gen Pilots in there too. I am sure they are worth more than $4500. I was just like...

First:
This picture doesn't even look real.
Second:
The EXIF data I pulled from the pic says it was taken somewhere in far Western China.
39° 41.81′ 75° 37.94′ Last I checked, China wasn't participating in the CfC program.
So I say a big resounding to this story.

I don't get how some of these qualify.
I thought it was a certain age and original EPA MPG under some value.
2008 Nissan Alitima Coupe, for example, too new and acceptable MPG, no?
Some of the others ('vettes, M-series, AM, etc) I bet were trashed beyond repair, sitting in some redneck's front yard for the past 10 years.

There was a story on the new about a couple that traded in their Nissan Extera for a new vehicle, later they are cruising by the dealer and guess what their SUV that was traded in for the cash for clunkers was sitting up front as a used car. From what i read all these cars are destroyed. First thing that they do to vehicle is pour a silicone/acid based additive in the oil then just rev engine till it ceases, then i also believe they put something in the transmission if its auto that way its useless. But the dealers response was instead of waiting for the state to give them their money back they resold or going to resell it at a profit.

I think thats bull also. I mean cmon. You know you could sell those cars for more than 4500 so I dont think someone with half a brain would fall for that deal.
Oh my 03 RL falls into the c4c even though it is a L.E.V and gas milage was 18-24. The c4c fudged the papers and said it only got 16mpg's.

well is there any rule saying these cars are in actual running condition? I believe that as long as they are registered for 1 year they were eligible.
The GNX and the newers "exotic" cars were probably already in bad shape, could have been cars that might have been in some accidents but weren't totaled yet...

I don't care what happened to it, if a GNX is in drivable condition and someone traded it in, they've got bird shit for brains. There's no way a real deal GNX is worth at most $5,000. I'm guessing a super hoopty one would probably swing for $15,000, and even then its unlikely because considering how much of a collector car it is, no one would let it rot like that.
I think this is just some hoax someone's pulling off.

if it was a regular GN then yea i could see 5K if it was rotting. but then again these cars had to be in drivable condition and someone would buy them and restore them
i just think some people don't realize what they have.....

WHAT A BUNCH OF DUMMFUZKS!
OK. Regained composure. They killed a GNX? An Aston Martin? Even if both cars were rustbuckets, they could have been sold by the owner for parts alone for more than $4500! What is this country coming to when people don't realize how to make money off their car?

I wouldn't believe much of anything written in that article.
