Tango'd with a WRX STI
Tango'd with a WRX STI
Last night after work, yes I work late every saturday, I went downtown Miami to Tobacco Road for some live music. Stayed a couple hours and made my way back to I-95 north. When I hit the ramp and merged onto the freeway, I saw a car coming up fast in the fast lane. Since I'm always on the prowl I sped up and merged to the middle lane as he was coming up on my 6. Going about 70 at this point while he came up beside me. I eased into the throttle to match his speed and of course the fish bit and were on. I was in 3rd gear already and nailed it. Poor guy had no chance. I walked away from him so fast that it's hard to describe.
A little note on what I tryed on my car last night while travelling to downtown befor the WRX. I gave the car a few test runs with the boost controller off. That means I was only pulling 4 psi since the spring is rated about that. On the boost controller there are OFF, Setting A, Setting B. Setting A is set to 6.5 psi and I gave it a couple runs to red line at 6.5 with no discernable problems. AFR went richer from where it was at during 4psi. At 6.5 psi, the AFR was 9:6-9:8 with 80 lbs of fuel pressure. I was happy as I will work on getting to 11:5-11:8 which I think is the sweet spot for this engine.
Before I left Tobacco Road, I decided that I'd try Setting B. It was previously set for that 10 psi run I tried before the injector upgrade. I backed it down some to a guesstimation of 9psi. Wow, what a rush, no more lean rich lean rich conditions that occured when I tried it before. 440's seem to work
So back to Mr. WRX. After totally creaming him he seemed to want to try again. I let him come up on my six and let him get the jump on me. He pulled to a lengh in front of me and I nailed it, caught him and then just stayed in the gas enough to stay slighty ahead by a bumper. While this was going on, I'm watching him drive the shit out of his car trying to pass me. When he shifted it was like he threw his whole body into it. Me, I intentionally shifted like a granny and still popped right back up there with him. I'm in forth now, and got tired of watching him, so nailed it right to red line in forth. He went bye bye.
The car runs awesome at 9 psi. The AFR was fairly rich at that level and my fuel pressure was approaching 95lbs. Happened so fast, I just glanced at it at the top of 4th gear
Not knowing much about the WRX STi, so I dont' know if this is a good kill or not. His car had that huge wing and nice larger wheels. It look good and I suspect it may give a NA CLS a spanking. What are your guys take on this car?

With STIs it all depends on the type of mods he has. I agree they are not top end cars, but say he had a bigger turbo that could be taken care of.
Good kill nonetheless, lurk around the Subaru boards, maybe he'll post his death. Your car must be a lot of fun!

Stock from a roll you two would pretty close, with a slight edge to the STI.
But with your set-up, most STIs won't have a chance from a roll. Their big advantage is the AWD which helps them get off the line, but from a roll that advantage is lost.

Oh. That explains it. Did the turbo setup finally get tuned?

That WRX last night was bone stock as much as I can determine. The exhaust was stock, saw the tips, so I'm assuming pretty much the whole car is stock because the first thing to mod is the exhaust. They come with 300hp from the showroom in stock form according to the specs. It's not a great kill, but was fun watching him take it so seriously. Further up the road he ended up beside me and wouldn't even look over. hehe..Cheers.

Don't underestimate this engine. The crank and rods are fine, although I haven't run a leakdown, the exhaust smells fine, and the spark plugs are clean since my last check during the injector install. It's the pistons that one has to worry about. With that much boost and heat, it could just be a matter of time, wish i had an EGT gauge, that would tell me much. This one just has to last till my 3.5 is finished, and if it goes before then oh well.
