which SUV for under 40K?

sorry for another "which car to buy" thread,

but my friend (from Colorado, not So. Cal) is looking for an SUV for under 40k
but she has pretty strict requirements

- Must be NEW
- NOT American
- 4X4
- Decent amount of luxury
- Some amount of economy would be a

the only thing i could really think of would be a 4runner, or maybe the Highlander Hybrid for economic purposes.

i think she was looking at the X3, but i haven't heard a single good review of that car ever, and the ML is probably out of the price range. How is the touareg?

what do you guys recommend? I know i'm forgetting something good, and it's just slipping my mind. probably have to test drive them all anyways, but just to get an idea of what dealerships to hit up first

OMG should this even be an question? Ofcourse the Acura MDX, cus for anything else it's either over priced or lack in luxury department.
Sorry I forgot to mention you can probably get a base Tourage for under 40K.

the RDX sounds like a pretty neat package. I myself have never liked the MDX or RX330, although those can be negotiated down, but how about a negotiated down Touraeg or FX35?

2 Cents from a married with kids, almost 30, economy minded type of guy:

People really kill me whith this it must be NEW shit. Save a shit load of money and buy slightly used (under 10K miles and under two years old). Let someone else eat the initial depreciation and save yourself a shit load of money.

Buy in the summer too. High gas prices will curtail SUV sales in the summer so you will be able to get a good deal. A lot of people will be trading them in to when the 3 to 4 dollar a gallon gas prices hit in June.

With gas prices as they are, I'd even suggest lowering the price to 30Gs and picking up a used civic for under 10Gs as an everyday econo driver.

Touerags get pretty pricey. I always suggest something with 3 rows of seats, but if that isn't a necessity, I say go with the Murano/FX. X3 seems damn small for the money to me.

x3 is ugly, it's not even a proper BMW.
Murano is too girlie for what it is.
My neighbor just bought a 2006 MDX, looked damn nice also it fits your price range perfectly

FX-35 or MDX(but i'm impartial)...also the 07 mdx will be out sooner or later so you can catch the 05's 06's for the low-low

I'd say the 4Runner for sure. American SUV's imo are the best hands down.

Don't get an x3 under any circumstances. A friend has one, and i was disgusted about what a POS it was. I couldn't believe that BMW would put such a model out. Granted, she had the basic model, but i was still shocked. I love the FX-would you consider a station wagon or something like that?

It's for a girl, so I think the Murano is fine... FX is aother choice...

I like BL^5's ideas.... a used Toureg would be cool...

Oh, don't forget the Volvos...

And maybe a station wagon/minivan might be another option (I really hate big suvs).

Subaru Tribeca or Nissan Murano. If you really don't need an SUV, an Outback Wagon or may do the trick too.

PS: Forgot about the new Toyota FJ Landcriuser

AMEN. Very good point! You've never seen resale value dopr so fast as in the first year.
Two years old and under 10K miles you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference. Just look at the loaners you get from Acura. Mostly a year or two old, less than 10K miles, and in good shape. you can save quite a bit adn still have plenty of warranty if that's the concern.

That really is true. My wife has a 2003 Ford Expedition Eddie Bauer, our third Expedition. We've loved each one we've owned. This one is the best with power-flip 3rd row, rear air, leather, 5.4 V8 , reliable as a rock!
Not to mention fairly handsome.

IMHO, most crossovers tend to be considered girlie specifically because the typical driver is female...and this includes the FX.

We have the Murano (SL AWD w/Touring) and it's a TERRIFIC all around vehicle. Currently there is a pretty good lease deal on the Mo: $2,399 down/$359 month (SL AWD w/Touring pkg).

Prior to getting our Murano, we checked out a few comparable domestic make crossovers for <$40k. Long story short, the offerings from Ford, GM and Jeep absolutely did NOTHING for us and became a non-consideration.

thanks, i completely forgot about the FX35, i love that car, and the way it sounds, haha

i might have to check out the MDX as well, but her last RL was a complete lemon, so they might not like acura anymore

i suggested the new FJ, but i find very few people that actually like the look of that car (especially girls). anyone know the reliability on the touareg or the XC90?

if it were me buying a car in colorado, i know i'd be heading straight for a used Subi LGT or something along those lines, but some people are picky i guess, and it's not my money, haha

Although I love the Teg it an the XC statistically are poor reliability choices.

If you really mean a 4wd vehicle then the 4 Runner would be my choice, BUT you can have a 2 year old low milage GX470 in the budget which I like a lot better, if nothing for the added head room.

If she can deal with AWD (I assume so since the FX is a choice) the Lexus RX. If you act fast a new 330 could be had for a decent deal before the RX350 hits. IMHO it is a much better vehicle than the MDX but it is proced accordingly.

My dad has only owned American SUV's. He's had the blazer, Explorer, Jeep, and all have been great vehicles. GM makes a solid SUV.

So what you are saying is, you have no basis for comparison?

I'm implying that I know American SUV's hands down are great. I know many people with European or Japanese SUV's, those are great too, I from experience like the American made ones.....

okay, that's what I was trying to get at.
My dad has had a Bronco, Explorer, Expedition, Navigator and is on his third Escalde, all in the last ten years, and with the exception of the Navigator, they have all been excellent vehicles.

I do have to say though, I have preferred our Lexus, Infiniti and Acura SUV's to our American SUV's, but that's just me

I have to agree, Lexus and Acura make some sweet SUV's. I have both within the family, and they are awesome.
