SUV shopping... 55K~70K range
SUV shopping... 55K~70K range
so in about three weeks, i'll be shopping a brand new suv for my mom.
man... i endlessely recommanded some nice Merc or Jag sedans, but she wants an SUV...as always.
as a car enthusiast, i don't really see a point in having an suv, especialy in this bad gas price days... but somehow she loves the suv.
fortunately, the parents have other daily car, plus she won't be driving this car everyday, and it's her money...lol can't complain about her getting what she wants.
I've been roughly shopping, and will be going to dealer in couple weeks doing some deep search.
what i'm thinking is Range Rover Sport HSE (she doesn't need a supercharged model), Porsche Cayenne v6 (again, why would she need a s model), ML350, GL450.
after a long story and discussion, she wants either Cayenne or the Range Rover.
I honeslty say there's no point of not leasing, but purchasing a cayenne v6... i jus hate the base model.
I wanna go with the Range Rover Sport HSE with some fat tires so i can enjoy them as well at time...
any experience? price advice?
any comments appreciated.

Check this thread, I'd get an RR HSE over a base Cayenne... the GTS is a different story, so since that's not an option, the HSE with rims!

RR/LR is at the bottom- literally- of every reliability and quality survey I've seen for the past couple of years.
They're both not the most reliable of cars. But fuck if you have the money for a $70k car in the first place you can afford the repairs. Plus you'll have the warranty for the first couple years anyways.
I'd go with the Range Rover, the base Cayenne is nothing special in my mind.

Oh, and let mom drive the 'effin things so she can decide.
When it comes down to this sort of choice for an "SUV," best to wash your hands of it so you don't get any blowback or her bitching about "your choice" if the damn thing breaks down and mom ends up with a loaner or rental for a week or two.

anyway, i think the range sport beats the cayenne looks wise..of course reliability might be a different story..they're both expensive to maintain, but i think the range would have more problems LOL..good luck with your decision!!

at least the "S"... but the 6?
The GTS is HAWT looking... actually looks sportier than the turbo.
land cruiser is too big..that's jus true gas waste
i love BMW, but i hate the X5...my mom also hates it
Audi Q7, well, new, not bad design...but too big, actually too long
i like the MDX, but with more money they can spend, i don't recommand a "downgrade". but actually drove it the other day, it does run nice, real damn good car...maybe i'll visit the dealer again.

Working at a Porsche dealer I understand my opinion is very biased so I'm not going to tell you to get the Cayenne.
I am going to say to avoid the Range Rover at all costs. They cost about 30K to own for one year. In the used car market, they are about the most undesirable product available.
I have had the unfortunate opportunity to have to explain to their owners how much their car is worth in todays market several times over the last 2 months and so far, they haven't been happy.
RR= low resale and low reliability.

A co-worker of mine has an RR SuperDuper Charged. It's a nice looking vehicle from the outside, but the interior for the price is sorta meh. It's already been in the shop a half-dozen times in the past year.
Cayenne V6 seems pointless, but if she drives like a middle aged woman, there probably is no need for more power.
Surprised she hasn't considered the X5 or X6
Reconsider the MDX even though it may not have enough bling for mom. Wifey loves hers, I would have preferred the Sport pack, but as it stands - she doesn't drive aggressively and wouldn't appreciate it. Sound system is nice and the SatNav is better than the Euro's.

The new Cayenne with the direct injection 3.6 V6 is a VAST improvement over the prievious port injected 3.2L version. @ 50+ more horsepower and torque, and essentially equal gas mileage.
Lots of folks here saying the V6 is a silly choice, and I get that. Its an enthusiast forum here.
That being said, it will be plenty powerful for your mom, and I think it would surprise some folks here as to its capability.
Rangey Rovers are cool to look at and drive.....as long as they're owned by someone else. Avoid at all costs for all the reasons given in the posts above.
Also, be sure to purchase the extended factory warranty from Porsche if she plans to keep it past the standard warranty period.

Anyone here actually own one? I do. 2006 RR HSE. Zero problems, solid as a tank. Looks, rides, and even smells like nothing else on the road. Just a unique vehicle.
We've enjoyed it tremendously and have no regrets about the purchase. I should go spend some time with it since, according to everyone here the engine will fall out tomorrow.

imo, if you buy it new, and look to sell it in about 3-5 years, damn get the range rover
as long as you have it with the warranty, and look to sell it within a decent timeframe where most of the problems will go to the next owner, hell get it...
new RR>new cayenne
3 yr old RR<3 year old cayenne
ive never owned one, but ive been in a land rover of my cousins and he always buys a new one and sells it within 5 years. no problems, dealer deals with the long term stuff...

don't take it personally man... no body said EVERY single one of them is a lemon... but a quick google on RR's reliability doesn't look too promising... but then again... according to you... their all lies, right?

Don't get wrong, I would love to own a RR as well, but it's just way too damn risky to buy that car.
The Cayenne models are among my favorite SUVs so I'd vote for that. However, I see no value on the V6 model. I'd get an MDX Sport/Ent if it were my choice. If she must have a european model, a new ML350/ CPO ML500 would be my choice.

I keep vehicles on average about three years. In 2010 I'll probably be able to fetch $30-35K for it depending on mileage. There's a tear in my beer....

thats why i said IF you mom is like that, one who knows that she gets a new car say every 5 years such as the majority of car buyers, than i would go for the range.
my family... especially my dad shared your view of keeping the car until the value is below the tires it rides on. but some people have the luxury of changing their cars often because they want to and imo, the range rover is that type of car - only good new and short term
