Storage costs
Storage costs
Hey folks, Just wondering if anyone has an rough idea of what it costs for self-storage units that can hold a car. I currently drive a TSX and was thinking about buying a "toy" for the summer weekends. However, I'd need a place to put it during the winter and don't want to leave the TSX in the driveway during the many snowstorms we usually get. Anyone know?
I've never stored a car in those self storage places, but have had to store a few off premise from time to time, and have had great luck with private garages. I've actually found a few places in the classifieds, but many others have come through contacts and friends asking around for me. It often seems that people have an empty garage, or other times landlords wanting to rent garage space that isn't required by tenants living in the home. If it's secure, you're the only one in there, and only you (other than the owner) have a key, a private garage can work out quite well. I've paid anywhere from $80-150.00 for secure garage space.

Honestly they vary from region to region and from facility to facility so your best bet will likely either be Google or your local yellow pages.
What you may also consider is finding a friend/relative with unused garage space. I did this for a while when we had 4 cars (only 2 of us and only a 3 car garage) with a neighbor. Paid him $25/mo for his third bay which was unused and out of the way of his other cars and "garage traffic".
I hooked him up with some cases of beer too after all was said and done

Most self storage places won't let you store any vehicles inside due to the potential of fire from gasoline... Some of the places will let you store vehicles, but you'll have to park it outside with the RV's and boats.
Find a private garage somewhere, because indoor car storage in boston is going to cost an arm and a leg. Best bet is to look for a privately owned garage (like terry and jb suggest) in the boston burbs. You might be able to find something on craigslist, but you better act fast before the college kids grab all the choice spots...

I managed a self storage facility for a few years about 5 years ago, in rural upstate NY a 10x20 was $95/month and vehicles were allowed. Of course the price will very by region, as JB said and with people losing houses I think the self storage business will be thriving for at least the next 10 years.
On a side note I think greater then half the people who used self storage paid more in rent for the year or two they were there then the stuff they were storing was worth.
