State troopers

Ok to start off the story of my day, I had to be in court at 9:30 this morning for two tickets i received almost a month ago. Both at the same time, one for speeding (on the way to court) and the other for my window tint. I had 35% all around. I live in VA strict ass driving laws. But anyway i went to court for that and just ended up paying $160 in fines. Could have been worse but anyway. Well later in the day me and one of my buddies went to a store down the road to get a drink and when we pull in, there's two state troopers sitting in the parking lot. The worst part about it is , one of them is the same one i was in court with today. He asked me to step inside the store when i got there and gave me a lecture for about 5-10 minutes about how its a safety issue and that i obviously dont respect the law because i haven't taken the tint off. He then told me that the other state trooper car had planned on giving me a ticket but he told them that he would take care of it. So he didnt give a ticket but gave a lecture about it. but i'l take a lecture any day over another ticket.

dang... harsh laws with regards to the tint...

BTW, any pics of yor car with the 35% tint? I'm thinking of getting that and wouldn't mind seeing some more pics of it

EDIT.

Wait... by 35% all around does that include the windshield? If not, then indeed I'd find those laws harsh, but if it includes the front windshield then I have to ask how easy you find driving at night because I could only imagine that level of darkness would annoy the living f*ck outta me as I was trying to see in front of me

i hate state troopers too. i got 5 tickets at once, 4 bogus ones. went to court with my lawyer and about $734 later for the lawyer and court/ticket fees, 4 out of 5 tickets got dropped (even tho the one that didnt was bogus too) all i got was a 8 hr traffic school. the worst part was that i was comming back from a chicago meet and a few members saw me (didnt see them since the cop threw me in the back of his squad car in hand cuffs)
learned my lesson and i rarely if ever speed again

but i feel your pain. they always go for the young guys with nice cars thinking that we got something illegal.

Looks like VA is 50% Front Side, 35% Back Side and Rear Window.

At least you didn't get *another* tint ticket; he could've been a *real* dick about it.

These sort of stories are why I've changed my mind and am going with 35% instead of 25%. I've done my homework online and checked with my cop buddies and everyone seems to agree that 35% is the safe zone for Ontario. Damned tint laws are too vague and open to interpretation up here

Looks like they need to foucus on more important shit. They shouldnt be hanging around stores. You must be in a small town to constantly see the same cops all the time.

vivftp, you're from toronto?

sucks for you act_up03, 35% all around imo is not even dark.. i got 20% all around and haven't been bothered yet.. i still think 20% isn't dark enough lol

in toronto, i dont think the law states an exact % so it's basically if the cop thinks it's too dark than you're getting a ticket.

Yepperooni, I'm a Torontonian and a proud Canuckian

And indeed the law does not state any specific tint value of what's legal here. It's entirely up to the officer to decide if he likes it or not. Like I said though, from various other forums, people who claim to have spoken to cops, and one of my closest friends who's a cop, 35% tint should be just fine on the windows, and they don't really give a crap about the rear window.

Personally, I'd like it dark enough to have a certain measure of privacy in the daytime, but not dark enough that it'd make looking at things in the night a bitch... especially since I like driving out into the middle of nowhere in the warmer weather where the only lights are those from you car and any random animal could run out onto the road at anytime.

Hey, here's an idea... how about transition windows? You can get transition lenses for glasses, why not transition glass for your car windows? So in daytime they tint darker, at night time they're nice and clear

Also, I wonder what the laws are here about simply having darker glass, as opposed to tint film on clear glass. I was reading about this topic on another forum and apparently there are at least some places in the States where it's legal to have darker glass, but you can't put equally dark film on your windows... makes no sense to me, but sometimes laws are just messed up like that...

I got 20% on the side and the back window. I am planning on taking it back and get 40%- 50% on the front windshield. I live in Tennessee. The law here is 35% on side and back None on the front. The police here are not that bad on the tint unless you find the cop that has not had his donuts for the day lol

ive only got 1 ticket for tint the 3 1/2 years ive had the car... just paid the ticket..my fault i was speeding, cop gave me a tint instead... but it also helps if you roll the window down all the way and have license and info ready for the cop, dont be a dick or you will def get a ticket.. at night I just turn on all the lights so the cop can easily see the whole interior.

I put 35% tint all around on my old AV6, but stuck to legal tint on TLS. 35% isn't terribly too dark and haven't been pulled over in over 4 years with that. Since the interior is all black in TLS, the legal tint still looks darker. It could be my imagination, though. I am happy with the way it is as I don't have to worry whenever a cop passes by and I can see fine at night. I see some guys with dark tint rolling the window down when backing up because they can't see out. Not fun in -30C temperature we have now in Canada.

I have 2% on mine all around, i didnt even know until i got pulled over, and the cop put some sort of testing thing on my window, got a warning and told me to take it off, ha yeah right

so i found out, the car had 35% with 5% on top of it, mafia style

even when the sun shines through it, you cant see shit!

I can't blame cops for hating tint and harrassing anyone who sports it. Suppose they have to approach your tive talk you, your window might be rolled down but for all they know someone in the back seat is filling a magazine will ammo. They're walking into a situation blind fearing for their life and you just want your car to look a little cooler.

/\ please, that's the worst excuse ever. i have 35% on my CL, got harrasted for it and removed the front tint, it make the rear of the car no more visable then if the window was down. its all BS.

fact is, 35% aren't dark at all. IMHO the real reason why cops don't like it, is b/c they can't tell if you are wearing your seatbelt or not. the tint makes it very hard to spot, especially if the interior is dark also. also they know, if they say u had it off (even if you did), your lawyer (or you) can fight it, saying your tint is too dark for him to see if i'm wearing a seatbelt or not, pics will prove that, taken at the right angle. i'd rather pay a $40 tinted window fine, then a $75+points ticket!

I had like 8 tinted window tickets last winter, had to remove my tint, got them all dropped.

35% is really light, I'm surprised that you got hassled for it.

1) I doubt cops get worked up over seatbelts and 2) you shouldn't be at risk of getting a no-seatbelt ticket in the first place. I'm not a letter of the law type. Not wearing a seat belt is just a very bad idea.

35% tint might be mild during the day but it might make all the difference at night. I'm not a big fan of cops, I don't think most of them are in it for the right reasons, but I still think their arguments against tints beat out vanity.

It's best to just be legal in VA, getting a ticket then going to court and afterwards the same officer sees you with the same tint isn't good. If you keep it on you will definitly get another ticket.

Most troopers and local cops in the NY/NJ area don't care too much about tint. Once in a while you'll get a hardass, though. I took my tint off my 2 front windows because I got pulled over by a local cop just for the tint a couple years ago. He gave me a warning, not a ticket. I decided to take it off so I don't get hassled because he and many other cops constantly patrol one particular road I'm on every day. My tint was only 35% all around as well. Now it's only on the back 3 windows. Doesn't look as good, but at least I know I won't be hassled anymore. NJ law says no tint on the front windows whatsoever.

So let me get this straight. You're pissed because you were told to remove the illegal tint, you didn't and got caught by the cop that issued the ticket?

Yeah, you have every right to be pissed at the cop

For all of you who complain that Cops busting balls about tints is BS and that they have nothing better to do, see this video and fast forward to 1:10. Understand the video and perhaps you can see it from the cops point of view.

Closer to home, this cop was shot and killed when he pulled over a vehicle with Limo tint so dark they couldn't see inside as they were approaching. Once they were a few feet from the rear of the car bullets started flying from the rear seat wounding one cop and killing PO Timoshenko instantly.

The tint was so dark he never saw the gun pointed at him the whole time.

Awesome video. I was looking for something like that to prove that what could obviously happen has actually happened.

ok that sucks but I have you beat.
Last year I got a ticket for speeding. Anyway the cop was a total dick and I went to court and paid a $55 fine. So, I am leaving court and get pulled over for doing 40 mph in a 35 mph zone...WTF? yep, I got a ticket. I was like dude I was only doing 5 over the limit. Who else gets a ticket on the way home from going to court for a ticket????

I understand your thinking and agree with window tint. I have 35% all the way around on my CL and you can easily see any movements in the car so its not a big deal and cops have actually complemented my car at a gas station before. What does irriate me about the tint laws though at least in PA is that an SUV, or Pickup can use 5 layers of limo tint if they want and its perfectly legal . So if the law is really based around officer safety they why is it ok for someone with a gun to sit in the back of an SUV?

I understand the safety issue there is but 35% is not dark. I'm more worried about the VA laws of how dark it can be. I can see 20% being dark but, you can see inside anything above that.

The laws protect everyone. It might not be dark during the day, but at night it makes things a lot more difficult.

If the biggest problem in your life is you have illegal tint and/or get tickets for breaking the law you have no problems and need to get a life. Seriously. Children with powerful vehicles and illegal tint... Are just asking for trouble.

Kids should be focused on other things, like saving their money, getting a good education and buying a house - you know putting down roots. Not wasting a shit load of time and money on a worthless car.

If you get distracted by crap like this in life, how are you going to be successful? Get a grip, everyone, and move on to more manful things. Life's short and your tint level isn't doing anything for you.

That blows. I could be wrong, but I think the limit is something like 20 or 25% for front windows, and it doesn't matter for the back windows.

I would've felt a little awkward if I were you when the guy was lecturing. lol
