So ... Tyler "needed" a new daily ...

True that.
The car isn't worth much .. and the only money going into it is maintenance / whatever is absolutely necessary to keep it driving decently / safely.
Car needs tags .. and smog is due next year. Currently, car has an "Engine Service Soon" light on the dash which means it has a catalytic converter code.
Have I told you how much I hate CA smog?
I
Fucking
Hate
It.

$4-500 difference.

My S2k was like $50 for tags lol. Golf and Subie are ~$300 but get cheaper over time. I think the Jeep is ~$100ish?
Or just move to MN and not worry about any of that.

I find it ironic that CA has some of the richest car culture in the country ... yet, has 0 love for cars from a legal / emissions stand point.
We've discussed this before and I'm afraid the answer is still no - You got to be a special kind of crazy to put up with winters like that

lol...you can tell how badly he hates it by how much he touts the cheap cost of living and registration fees
buy 2 less expensive shoes a year and you too could afford to register your car somewhere you actually want to live!

Really not as bad as you think it is. Certainly worse than your area though. Plus we have bigger riots and less corona.
What else can I cut out to pay for the rest of the higher living expenses?

explorer was 500+
my dads friends owns a Bentley, 1700 a year.
gym bro man I know, has a Lamborghini it was like 2900 for the year. So really look Sr how much CA makes off of registration and the license renewals at 33 a pop.

Florida is like $78 a year to register...I pay more for the specialty plates.
AND it's somewhere you'd want to live. Maybe. I mean, unless you hate bath
salts and scandily clad babes.
Sam, sell your woodworking tools!
I'm just busting chops!

If we're comparing bill sizes, VA is $30/year for a passenger car under 4000lbs and $35/year for a passenger car over. Inspections (outside Northern Virginia) are safety only and are $16/year. Personal Property Tax is where they get you though - it's based on the assessed value, the tax rate varies by locality, and the "tax relief" is only applied to the first $20k. My tax this year was just under $600

The state doesn't have as many detector-detectors as you'd think, and most of them are along I-81 and in Northern Virginia. If it's a hidden install, you'll likely get away with it. If it included jammers, bring the speed down and turn it off so the cop can get a reading on you.
I'm sure you'll save a ton of money in other categories too - VA has a relatively low cost of living as long as you stay out of Northern VA. But I'm not begging people to move here, this state has plenty of downsides

LOL...
I just recall Johnny calling me on my drive down from Ohio in Blue and him warning me to turn it off in VA.
I actually gave it to the guy that bought my CTS-V...I just use waze and common sex now.

You know you're turning into a grumpy old man when you're complaining about your states taxes / car registration fees on a car forum.
I'm happy what we're becoming.
To bring it a bit back on topic .. my lawd this thing is a looker.

The E46 generation's facelift was really not drastic at all, but wow did it modernize the front end of that car. Pre-facelift E46s are IMO good-looking as well, but look considerably older.

Ours is based on value and age of car. You are taxed on a percentage of the value for a certain number of years before it defaults to a standard road tax. First year it's 100% of value then it goes down by 10% per year for 7 years before it defaults to like $35. That means the Jeep should be MUCH cheaper this year than last. You pay an additional $30ish per year (which technically is a donation) for the specialty plates or $100 once plus $30 per year after for personalized plates
The facelift E46 will never age, it looks glorious even today. I kind of want another one as a beater lol. Either that or an E46 M3 as an investment at this point.

Drove the wagon quite a bit this weekend!
I was walking the dogs and ran into the neighbor who originally sold me the car. He said he had some parts he wanted to give me ... OEM front corner lights and side markers. Score!
Install took 5 minutes lol. Not a huge fan of the silver outline but, the eventual plan is going back to OEM lights .. or maybe Xenons if I find them cheap.
Also picked up some baby stuff from a friend on Friday night and decided to stop for a few pictures after. I mean .. car is freshly washed - why not?
Saturday afternoon rolls around and the wifey wants the sunshades up .. sounds like a Sunday AM project.
2 x 1 1/4 inch galvanized pipes
Lots of anchors / misc. hardware
3 trips to Home Depot for 1 project ... I hate that .
Thanks for reading

Awesome man, love that you're using the wagon to wagon.
Just FYI, the swap to OEM xenons is more involved than just changing out the headlight units. You need to add in the level sensors and a bunch of other crap as well. I'd recommend going aftermarket or retrofitting them. TRS sells kits for E46 retrofits that are pretty easy. The headlight covers are clip on, not glued so it makes it pretty simple to disassemble them.

Thanks for the tip! Yeah .. now that you mention it, I remember hearing it's more work than what it's worth.
If I find some headlights cheap I'll swap them .. otherwise, I'm pretty content with the way the car looks right now for being an outside dog.
I'd much rather put a little money into swapping a few exterior panels / give the interior some love.
2 things that are bugging me is primarily the hood / front bumper.
Hood has some clearcoat rot near the BMW badge up front and the driverside metal grill surround is slightly bent inwards.
Front bumper has a crease from the PO rear ending somebody & a lower grill missing.
3-4 months back, there was a minty part out car in LA that I was going to make the trip up but, ultimately, decided against it because car parts were not a priority (are they ever?!) at that time.
Otherwise, roof, doors, quarter panel, rear bumper and fenders are mint ..

I prefer the amber as well, but the chrome housing clashes with the black out headlight housings
The car still looks great though, and I'm loving those wheels more and more with each photo.

So .... wagon is for sale. If anybody in SoCal wants a cheap project car, let me know!
Replacing it with something a little more new ... and ups my cuck status quite a bit. Few members on here already know, but hopefully driving up to get it in the next few months .
I'll miss this thing .. almost sad to sell it.
