So one of my employees just bought an Audi R8

Bad decision. If the frame is bent, even in the slightest sense, he will be buying tires every 6 months. My buddy had an old GS300 that got ran into the left front corner. His tires squealed going around corners at 20 mph. After a his new tires were gone in 4 months he ditched the car.
How much did he pay for a potentially worthless car? Maybe he could part it out and gain something back if it is undrivable.

Plus, it will always have a salvage title and accident on the history report. He better keep good records if he plans on getting any money back for it. Fixing the cosmetics is one thing, but if there is anything wrong with it mechanically or electronically, he's screwed. If not, he MAY break even down the road if he's lucky, but he will get to drive and own an R8... so maybe he doesn't care about resale

I would be very interested to know what he paid for it. There is one currently being bidon at an auction site with the price currently at 17k and the car had 4k miles on it. It has front, rear, and side damage. I am sure the bid will go up more but I am not sure the car could even be fixed but obviously it would be dependent on the frame for the one I saw.
If frame wasn't messed up and it sold for less than 25k I would be in for it.

Well no shit...I didn't mean what I said to taken in the literal since. Nobody was holding a gun to his head.
not saying what he paid for it ...i'll let you fools speculate
Of course he had the car inspected. He's been working with cars his whole life so he's well aware of what needed to be checked out.

Lets use $90k as a benchmark for a functional R8. He thinks it needs $20k-$30k of work. He seems reasonably intelligent and car literate, so my guess is $50k.
Will a bank give you an auto loan on a damaged car?

Well sounds like he might end up with a steal but I hope he got it for way less than 50k. If it wasn't like 30-40k tops then it isn't worth it. If in the end he hasn't saved 15-20k by doing it this way then it wasn't worth it in the first place.

here's a pic of the car...the front end is kinda difficult to see back there wrapped around the pole, but nonetheless i think it's pretty clear that most of that will buff right out.
seriously tho i don't have anything to share at the moment - he hasn't sent them yet, but figured i'd give some comedy relief in the meantime.

Well no shit. If someone was, it would be considered a transaction under duress, which is illegal. Seriously though... still stand by my original comment... there are other options to own his dream car, not sure this was the best move. If it was a Chevelle or something, I'd see it, but with the sophistication in these exotics, inspection or not... I'd be concerned.

No need to explain, I know what you're saying.
Yeah I couldn't agree more about the sophistication aspect of it being of concern. That's where all my concern would stem from. You just never know.

I didn't read all the posts here, but I kind of find it interesting that so many care whether or not a particular individual can afford a particular car. Does it really matter? For the most part, anyone with a pulse and pen can get qualified for anything. Maybe the owner is from the ever so popular "spend large and save little" school of thought. Far too many will never admit to this way of thinking, but it's prevalent in today's society. Perhaps he has money from other sources we can only speculate. Either way, his car. His decision.
As far as whether or not a wrecked R8 was a sound purchase, again it's something we can't determine unless we know the owner's situation. Perhaps he knows someone that can help him acquire parts and repair it. Done properly, it will be fine. I've seen various shops repair cars that were heavily damaged and once inspected, were for the most part perfect. Personally, I wouldn't do it, but if he has access to qualified labour and good parts, it's certainly doable.

Who knows? If I damaged a new R8 within a twenty-four month period, I'd definitely argue with my insurance company that I want a replacement (I actually have on my policy that any vehicle purchased new is not depreciated within a two year period and the full purchase price be paid out upon loss). I know others that have done this, and vehicles with marginal damage are written off and replaced. As such, at times salvaged vehicles come up for bids with damage not terribly horrible.

'08 MX5 GT 6spd.
Kind of a late response but....R8s are meant to be driven hard and fast. I know if I had one, I'd track it and go on some "spirited" drives on some backroads...
That being said, this guy probably will too.
A previously wrecked car being driven hard is never good. I think he made a bad decision in purchasing the car.

Your employee would have been better off getting a non-salvaged sports car in a price range he could afford. Time+repairs=$$$. I hope for his sake it doesn't develop into a money pit. Good luck trying to resell it in the future.

Whats up with RDX owners?

I wouldn't touch ANY aluminum vehicle that has been damaged in some way or another. Sounds like a bad idea to me. I hope it works out for him though.
