Sure Engineers make great money, but I wouldn't want the stigma that comes along with the title. They're starting to get on the same level as lawyers and car salesmen. Everyone I know in a sales roll that has to deal with an Engineer says they're the worst to deal with because they're always trying to out tech the sales person and ask a billion and one questions. Just saying.

Hey I'm just the messenger.
I'm not too far off the Engineering path as a Product Designer thinking about going back for Industrial Design.

I wasn't calling you out; I was call out the sales people. However, I wan't aware that being too smart to understand was a stigma. I guess it's a burden I can live with. ![Roll Eyes](https://acurazine.com/forums/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif)

He must have REALLY wanted an R8 to do this. I can't imagine someone who is that fiscally responsible spending that much on a car at that age, but who knows. Also, holding a job that pays $3k/month while finishing engineering school in 4-5 years seems far fetched. Not impossible, but I would have to see it to believe it.
Anyways, I guess it depends on what kind of co-op job you get. I worked at 3 different companies when I was a student and my pay went up every time. I started at $2.7k/month (8 hrs/day), then went into a construction company, working 45-50 hours a day for $18/hour (around $3500/month). Some other students worked 10-12 hours a day, and were making $4k a month. Then I went into a public transit company and got paid around $3600/month.
On another note, that R8 owner might also be doing some side business(es)? That would help immensely if he's doing ok in those.

Mind you I am talking in Canadian currency (as I am in Canada), but then for the past few years, CAD is pretty much on par with USD.....

The talks about salary in different regions are interesting. Here in Indianapolis, you're living above average if you make $70K+. And you'd be considered rich if you're making $90K+. $40-$50K is average. I don't know if one could live in NYC on $40K a year.
Anyway, sounds like he either A) is a member of the lucky sperm club or B) has his priorities out of order. But hey, if you can afford it...

I wish that I could handle the math needed for an engineering degree. Four calculus courses + diff equations and physics would own me in the worst way possible.

^exactly...buddy could have a rich uncle or may have inherited a nice sum of money...as a car guy, I'd be happy for one of my eployees had they had similar good fortune, and as such, I'd ask for a go at the reigns of the R8...still in for pics though...

sorry fellas i out of the office yesterday afternoon so never got back to this thread.
anyways, so here's the skinny on this...
the reason he was able to afford the car, and the reason why he hasn't brought it to work is because he bought it with 'moderate front end damage'. he estimates around $20-30k. he's obsessed with R8's and he saw this as the only way he could acquire one at this point in his life; buy it and slowly fix it.
personally, i think he made a bad decision simply due to all the uncertainty and risk associated with this but that's just the businessman side of me talking. the car enthusiast side of me says that it's his dream car and he's capable of doing the work to fix it so if all goes well, he got a hell of a deal on an R8 so more power to him.
regarding pics...i haven't even seen the car in person myself so don't think i'm holding back. it won't even be drivable until he get's a new wheel and tire which were damaged. i told him to send me some pics and he said he would but only rear shots...all the damage is in the front![rofl](https://acurazine.com/forums/images/smilies/rofl.gif)
i'm interested to hear what you guys think about his decision.

^he has one thing going for him...he's been working on cars his whole life...primarily imports. he's also a very smart kid but as i originally stated, there is just so much uncertainty here...as i think you're eluding to as well.

Three Wheelin'
wonder what a fender or set of headlights costs for an r8. The only way he could POSSIBLY ever make out on this is to fix it and keep it forever. IF he can fix it to even 80% perfect.

No fenders needed on an R8 as they are part of the hood.

Bad decision. If the frame is bent, even in the slightest sense, he will be buying tires every 6 months. My buddy had an old GS300 that got ran into the left front corner. His tires squealed going around corners at 20 mph. After a his new tires were gone in 4 months he ditched the car.
How much did he pay for a potentially worthless car? Maybe he could part it out and gain something back if it is undrivable.
