The way they work in Camry's is that they shut off when the door is opened, maybe the door wasn't opened for some reason or another. But its a pretty standard feature on camry's from as early as the mid-80's, I have few camry's here right now I'll check and get back to you if its any different.

so did my (i mean my moms that i eventually inherited) 86, you had to hold the door handle up when you closed it and when you released it the lights would go off. toyotas were cool even back then.

Hell yeah, it looked pretty sharp back in those days, we had it for 15 yrs and it never gave one problem and looked new til the end. I should have never given it to my sister, she ran it into the ground within a year.

the 96 and 99 I have here does, however, the 03(which has a slightly different headlight switch with DRL controls as well) doesn't - pretty weird!

I think if your too lazy to turn you danged headlights off. A dead battery is the perefct lesson to teach you right.

People make such a big deal about auto on and auto off headlights. It's a stupid feature IMO. I don't need more electronic nannies taking care of me. I can flip a damn switch on my signal stalk when I WANT my lights on, and I can remember to shut them off. Anyone who doesn't deserves a dead battery.

I figure the money would better be spent on rain-sensing wipers. They're so much more useful, because the rain intensity relative to your car changes as you change speed.
