how many miles are on your car? i replaced my shocks at 118k, they were toast, fsttyms1 was able to get more out of his, it all kind of depends. cupping has nothing to do with a full or empty gas tank. bad alignment, improper tire balance, bad shocks (springs generally last the life of the car) will cause cupping. It will also make some road noise and generally bad driving characteristics.

Lack of tire rotation, improper alignment, wore suspension/steering components, improper inflation, aggressive driving, over loading, the list could go on and on. Some cars even when everything is in check will still have slight heal and toe wear(the technical name for cupping) with some tires. Its not a perfect world and not all tires work well on all vehicles with individual driving styles. So there is really no answer to this with out knowing a lot more information

go to each corner, and push down, if it bounces back slowly, time to replace
