So I raced my friends Mustang GT....

So I raced my friends 2004 Mustang GT which has 260 HP Stock. Mine kept up just fine. By no means did I beat him but he didn't beat me either. Has anyone had similar expierences?

I've raced a few and I have a 5AT. To me its a dead even race . . . The last one I raced was a manual and let me tell you how shocked he was to see me right next to him while he was running through his gears . . . but to make a long story short , he eventually just gave up. The driver would have to be very good with his machine and know his car to win , but then if I was driving a 6M who knows. Point blank dead even , but thats just my opinion !

I raced a Mustang and lost...but then I hit the revlimiter so blame the driver and not the car.

stock rustangs are slow ... with a 6MT you can get them pretty good from a rolling start

You must be referring to the V6. A 5MT GT (99-04) will run around 14 flat with a good driver, with the 4AT running mid-upper 14s.

jcentrone's run sounds about right.

I believe it totally, the TL is a low 14 second car stock with 6MT and I'm sure the 5at is down there too. Most last gen Mustangs are low 14's/high 13's.

I have posted before, 0-60 for the TL is around 5.8, Mustang GT is 5.6 (According to Motor Trend). So basically, they are pretty evenly matched. My last car was a 2002 Mustang GT... I'd say the TL would likely beat it off the line due to the different gearing, but overall they are a dead match... I liked the sound of the V8 at idle way better though

I race against an old mustang 5.0 Cobra, around 91 or 92 which has 225 hp back then I believe. Between two red lights, I overtook him and moved just ahead of him before the next red light. From this moment, he was much more quiet on the pedal....and very surprised I guess !

Nice Run.

FYI:

It's a 93 Cobra, the first year in a Fox-Body, and the HP in the Cobra's was 255, with GT-40 Heads, 65mm T-Body, and a bit more of Cam; vs. 225 in the other 302 's and LX's.

The sticker (As I remember it - I owned one) said 240; but all the Stang Geru's at that time were putting them on the dyno and getting around 255hp...

Course, that was before the TFS heads, Mexican block @ 306, big cam, and a Procharger!

Ironically the opposite happened with the "320hp" 96 Cobra.

I raise the Bulshit flag on this one. Tell me how a sub 3000 pound car with more torque lost to a car that is 400 pounds heavier and less torque?

Hehe, my best friend has one of those. After my engine mods were done, I REALLY beat him rather than barely.

1st: it was a Cobra Stang between 1987 and 1992, not the fox body.

2nd: the kid on the steering. was spinning his wheels on every red lights, so I suspect that he gave what he can to try to beat me.

3rd: Since it's an old car, it was maybe not in perfect working order like a brand new.

4th: According to specialized magazines, the GT (or Cobra which had the same engine back then) was doing 0-60 MPH in about 6.4 seconds, and the quarter mile in about 15 seconds flat for a manual transmission. So yes the TL is faster.

5th: Yes a 2004 TL can pass ahead of a 92 (or older) Cobra Stang, I did it !

I've raced plenty of new stangs and have beat them by about half a car. All were stick so it was a close race.

If it was a GT, you'd need one hella fast TL. In the latest C&D, the Stang GT ran a 5.1 0-60 and a 13.8 1/4.

thats the new one. Doubt he has run up against those yet. But either way in most cases can't imagine a TL taking a well driven GT.

Maybe, but he referred to them as "new stangs." He could be referring to last years or this years. I guess I was speculating again, damnit.

A couple of things there:

* Fox Body (3G Mustang) = 1979-1993 Ford Mustangs

* The only Cobra model came out in it's final model year for this chassis (1993 Mustang Cobra )

Stock vs Stock, a TL should have little problem in dispensing with any stock GT prior to the 99 model year. However, I havent seen a non-modded pre-99 GT in quite some time around here.

Just so you know a front wheel drive car transfers a higher percentage of torque to the road vs. a rear wheel drive car. I just put a 100 wet shot on mine and watch out it is fast!!!

Although that is true, a front wheel drive car is far less capable of making use of that torque in the front. Wheelspin is always a major factor in front wheel drive cars. When you open it up WOT, the weight transfers to the rear. Due to this, major wheel slippage occurs in a FWD car.

My friend has an '02 Mustang GT auto with 5'' Flowmaster exhaust and air intake, and he beats my car every single damn time. I have an '03 TL-S, when I used to have an AEM CAI it used to be a little more even but don't underestimate the GT, even with an auto. Those things are pretty much straight-up with a 5AT '04/TL-S. I'm pretty sure a 5MT GT will beat a 6MT '04 TL.
