Smokey and the Bandit Trans Am

You know you want a 'Smokey and the Bandit' Trans Am | cleveland.com

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Let's face it, the real star of "Smokey and the Bandit" isn't Burt Reynolds. It's the car.

Now, even though Pontiac stopped making the Firebird in 2002 and went belly up in 2010, you can own a modern version of that iconic black and gold Trans Am.

With the help of Reynolds, custom shop Trans Am Depot recently introduced its SE Bandit Edition at the New York International Auto Show. The car, a converted new Chevrolet Camaro, features all the classic details of the Bandit car: the t-tops, Firebird hood decal, leather racing bucket seats, snowflake wheels and white-letter tires.

"That was the car to have, everybody wanted to be the Bandit," Scott Warmack, co-founder of Trans Am Depot, said in a promotional video.

The Florida-based company is producing just 77 special edition Bandit cars -- the movie came out in 1977 and that was the model year of the car used in the film. Reynolds, who starred in the original and a sequel, will sign each of them.

"Burt Reynolds is fundamentally responsible for the success of the Trans Am brand," Warmack said.

The new version will be considerably more powerful than the original. While the 1977 vehicle topped out at 185-horsepower, the 2016 version will be powered by a whopping 840 horses. The car won't come cheap: prices start at $115,000, according to Fox News.

"It's an airplane on the ground," Reynolds said.

So awesome. A little overdone with that bandit logo all over the inside and outside of the car... but otherwise it's pretty much a home run.

I would have rather had a more stock looking interior as well

Spot on! However....who's the target audience for this? I was nine when the first movie was originally released. (It was, and is, a really fun watch and not a bad way to waste 90 minutes.) Everybody else old enough to care about the movie is as old as Burt Reynolds now.

Love it. Sounds great too

As for the movie, i loved the original. Im just glad no one has ruined a classic trying to come out with a new remake/sequel/prequel .

Don't give Hollywood ideas. I, too, hope for no remake of this film. It was pretty good the first time around.
