I was coming home today about 8pm, when I see this black 03-04 Eclipse V6, either 5-6spd with a cannonball style exhaust. He was definitely looking for some action. His car was pretty quick. It pulled from the tools pretty good, but I caught him. We were on a 4 lane highway(2 lanes on each sided divided), very little traffic. I start to pull up next to him going 90mph and he starts to accelerate and so do I. I pulled on him pretty easily. I think his only mod had to be his exhaust because I figured with his car being lighter and having a MT he might beat me, but nope. I pulled on him to 110mph and was 2-3 car lengths on him and still pulling away when we slowed down for the next toll. At the toll we were right next to each other and I completely took him. My car was running awesome, perfect weather 60F low humidity. I thought I was invincible(not really just overly confident). Then a black SRT-4 with possibly an aftermarket exhaust, hard to tell, but it was loud and you could the gearchanges noticeably. We were right next to each other going 80mphand the road was about to merge about 1/2 mile up. I gun it and pull past him and got about 1.5 to 2 car length lead to about 105-110mph. Then he flys past me and gets about 2-3 car lengths on me and then we slow down. It was like he had nitrous or that car is crazy fast and he was playing with me(probably!). If it was stock those things are faster than a stock WRX, easily.

Stock SRT-4's are a lot faster then WRX's especially in a highway race. And SRT-4's are pretty loud stock since they don't have mufflers.

I didn't know they didn't have mufflers, that's crazy how can they pass emmissions tests then? I think this guy probably down shifted to third and said goodbye.

The turbine is enough of a restriction on the exhaust system to quiet things down so that mufflers are not needed.

Catalitic converters are what have to do with emisions. Its still a neon, a quick neon, but a neon at that.

i went deaf because i had my windows down and a freakin neon passed me on the highway just yesterday! those things are way too loud. and those popping noises are aggravating.

It was loud ass hell and yeah I could hear some weird popping noises. Those things will probably fall apart after 50k. It is a Neon still, just wicked fast, they're only 20k brand new though. Not bad for a fun car if you have the cake to waste 20k on a car that won't last.

wtf? why do you think it won't last? Weird popping noises? That's just how the exhaust on that car sounds.

Well, it is a dodge and doge reliability isn't exactly top notch...

Regardless, the popping you're hearing is, like steve said, the exhaust. I rather like the exhaust setup on the SRT-4. Gives the car a very racy exhaust sound. There is nothing behind the catalytic converter except for piping.

dodge sucks mr.steve, c;mon now do you think dodge makes a quality, reliable product(for the most part) No way, of course it won't last 10yrs as a good car should(unless you take extremely good care of it and don't abuse it). Almost anyone that buy's an SRT-4 is going to abuse it and drive it the way they should, like a sports car, but they are also used as daily drivers a lot and with Dodge's reputation for poor reliablity and awful tranny's the SRT-4 will have major problems. Does anyone that buys an SRT-4 think they are buying a reliable car? NO, they want a fast, cheap car.

Ragging on Neons reminded me of an article I read in the paper. Someone got killed over the weekend down here because some Benz owners were calling this guy's Neon rice (it was modded). They started fighting at a red light and one of the buddies of the Neon got clocked. When he fell his head hit the bumper of a car that was driving by so he died. Now the guy that punched him might get charged.

You said 50K miles, not 10 years. I'm not saying that Dodge makes an uber-reliable product, but 50K miles? Give me a break.

50k I am exhaggerating a bit, but I bet there will be more SRT-4's dying befoire 100k than after and plenty dying at 50k. A neon isn't reliable in the first place and throwing twice the HP through it isn't going to help. BTW I think it was an 04 Eclipse, had exhaust and sounded like an intake, but not sure. It was pretty quick though, I give props to Eclipse's, I hate Mitsu but they are pretty quick cars.
