How does it work? Do I have to donate money or something? Are there salesguys hassling people who show up?

No pressure at all.

Theres no salesguys there. I didnt have to donate anything...

You get there, sign a wavier and they take down your info. Then they tell you which car to get into and you go. ALONE.

Sounds fantastic.

Oh, it says on the website they are selling items at the dealership and a % of the proceeds go to this charity. Sounds legit to me, I'll definitely go and buy some stuff.

You can bring a passenger.

Some are manual. I drove a X3 manual that was horrid.

They had no Z4 manuals last year when i went to it though.

i did something like this when i was 15 and only had a permit. All we got to drive was 328's, but at 15 and just gotton my permit, i was scared to drive anything, especially when they made us spin out and evasive manuvers. I think i was the only 15 year old there too.

I think my mom drove the X5 there when it first came out, but i don't think she liked it all that much.

You might be thinking of a bmw driving safety school.

You don't donate money, BMW does. For every mile driven they donate $1 to the Susan G Komen foundation. They have been doing this for a long time now, almost ten years I think.

Everyone I talked to that did it really enjoyed it.

Gotta wait 2 more years till I can do it myself

If its closed then it most likely already happened in your area. They seem to have started in the east and moving toward the west.

I do this every year.

They used to have Manual / SMGs in their fleet, but I think they drop them (manual at least, dunno about SMGs) because people keep frying the clutches.

I drove a 540i with the SMG 2 years ago, and that was broken too. Keeps dropping out to neutral during hard launches.

I do this every year, they come to a local dealership by my work. Its fun, there's free food, and you basically get to drive almost the entire lineup, each mile you drive, $1 gets donated, and they encourage to drive as much as you want. No one bothers you to buy a BMW or anything, its just for the cause and its fun!

I am *SO* close to signing up ... but it seems it is open to US people only (at least, online) ... but it doesn't stipulate it. I suppose I could make up the online registration but then show up with my Ontario driver's license. Haha.

Thanks for the link, CS!

They had it last year @ Shea. I still recall rolling down Roosevelt doing 95mph in the 545i. I would love to try the more powerful 550i on that stretch.

?????

540i never had SMG in US. In fact there is no 540i in US since end of 2003 model year.

This is off topic, but does anyone know if Mazda will have one this year? I always miss it, and I keep hearing the fun challenges they have set up. Also, will Porsche have one again? I missed the event when they celebrated the release of the Cayenne. Then I never heard of another Porsche test drive event.

I have to wait 4+ years before I can do these things. Do all these events require the driver to be 21+?

This will be the 3rd or 4th year I've done it. I always look forward to it and take a day off work if I have to. 4 or 5 guys I work with are going to go too. Last year they had a 760i there but I couldn't drive it since I wasn't 25. Hope they have one again this year.

did you go? I was at the 830am event at Texas Motor Speedway. That turbo coupe was a blast! Adn the Hot Laps were awesome. I can see where "Ultimate Driving Machine" comes from. Can't wait for the Lexus event next month.

For teh record, I think that engine puts out more than the 300hp they claim.

I didn't know there was an event at TMS. I went to the one at BMW of Dallas on Forest Ln. Hot Laps? Was this the Susan G. Komen event or some other BMW event? The one I went to didn't have the new 335. But the 650, 550, and Z4 were amazing!

It wa a combo of the two. The 335i coupe event, then if you wanted to drive the X5, 645 cabrio, Z4 coupe, 545, etc, you could. However, if you wanted to do the hot laps ridign shotgun with a pro driver, you couldn't follow that up with teh Drive for the Cure, for obvious reasons. It was a blast.

Regardless, BMW is quietly phasing out the SMG.
