Selling a $20K car on craigslist
I've bought and sold cars on Craigslist. These were $5K cars. Price right, there were easy on both sides. Transaction went quickly on both sides. With $5K sales, there are certain level of expectations, both good and bad.
How about a $20K car? A MDX for example. Do you think that is the best approach for this target price range on Craigslist?
People looking for cheap basic cars are on Craigslist. But are people looking for higher dollar cars visit Craigslist too?

That's the downside to craigslist... low ballers and people just wasting your time. It may be less of a hassle to sell it to carmax or trade with dealer you're buying new car from unless it's a beater.

I've seen plenty of Porsches advertised on craigslist (private party sale). They are typically above the price you are talking about. Not sure how smoothly the sales go or if they sell at all but they are getting advertised.
I'd say the biggest hassle you face is the what type of funds will be used and transfer of those funds.

I sold a TSX on CL for over 20K. A few thousand was in cash, the remainder was in a cashiers check THAT I WATCHED THE BUYER GET FROM HIS BANK. Do not, under any circumstances, allow them to bring a pre-obtained cashiers check to the transaction. Meet them at their bank, watch them get the cashiers check from the teller and give it to you.

Is there a Carmax near your area? If so try them out. Surprisingly they were a pleasure to deal with. I sold a 2012 Genesis Coupe for $15K. I was in and out in an hour. Very smooth and hassle free.
They give you a price they're willing to buy and will not budge at that price, which is better that way so you don't have to stress about negotiations. So if you like it, sell it right there on the spot. If you want to think about it, their offer is valid for a week.

Carmax also very frequently offers you more for your car than what a dealer will offer on trade even if you aren't buying a car from Carmax. I was very surprised. I've sold 3 cars to them. Specifically one car a dealer offered me $2,000 on trade. Carmax paid me $4,200.

I sold my Accord to Carmax (very pleasant experience) and turned around the next day and purchased my RL from Craigslist private party (another pleasant experience). The guy I dealt with was very honest and even compensated me for an inconvenience he caused me. I would still proceed on the side of caution with CL but its not all bad out there. I think from now on any car I sell will be to Carmax or I'd at least check with them first.

Sold my dad's 550i for 15k, which was less than I hoped fore, but still over trade in.
The whole deal felt shady though. The guy had a suspended license so he cousin drove it away, he paid in cash that wasn't exactly new, and he never even got in the car before buying it. I reported the vehicle as sold as he was walking out of my credit union.
I still think that the police are going to knock on my door and ask what my connection is to some drug lord or something, but I really was tired of fixing that car for my dad.
I did have a pleasant experience getting him a replacement fx35 for a bit more though, but that was in phoenix.

I sold my wife's '09 Civic EX-L on CL for $15k (asked $16.5). He brought the cashiers check to our bank, she deposited it on the spot, and we used their notary to notarize the Bill of Sale. It wasn't any different than the end result of Autotrader or any other classified ad.
The key is to create a new email account and only use that information to weed through the riff-raff. You will get 95% spam and offers from brokers trying to sell your car for you.
FWIW, I didn't get a single offer posting it here or Cars.com (free) for over a month. The first offer from CL was the final offer.

Many people who post their cars on Autotrader, cars.com etc. also post it on CL. So I don't think it's any surprise to see high-dollar cars come up. Craigslist is filled with lowballers which are a pain to sift through. Enthusiast to enthusiast sales are great, though.

"I'm going to start negotiating with low-ball offers in my first email, despite not having seen the car. Then, after I've worn the owner down, I'm not going to show up to see the thing. After that, I'll no longer respond to emails."
