if you got a CarMax around you hit them up.
if not put a For Sale sign on them and wait for a buyer. if you take it into a normal dealer(like Acura,Honda, Toyota,Nissan, etc) they'll rake you over on trade in.

Carmax will give you a bit better than trade in, but you can do better selling yourself. Try Craigslist, autotrader, etc.

2 more options would be:
#1. Cragslist
#2. e-bay (if you feel really "froggy" with no reserve)

Selling yourself is going to be more of a hassle (not like going through the dealer isn't though) but you will get more money.

You may not end up with more money at the end of the day by selling yourself, at least in NY state. If you own the vehicle, that is to say hold the title with no lean, and you trade the vehicle in and for example say it is worth $10k in trade and the car you are buying is $20k, you only pay tax on the difference between the two and have no hassle. So you are actually getting $10,800 for your trade due to the tax savings, not to mention zero risk - by trading in my infiniti on the S2000 I ended up paying $80 tax on a brand new $34k MSRP vehicle.

Yup, I could have sold my MS3 for $1k more than what I got on trade but that $1k would have gone to the state in sales taxes.

So I traded it in because, well, fuck the state and their taxes.

^^wow I didn't know that, thats a good idea. I assume there's no way to sell a car as a private party, then buy another one tax free?

Either way you're still giving someone a failing tranny. Cuz if it's too much for the dealer to fix it'll end up at the auction or if you traded it at a shady dealer they leave the tranny as is and sell it to a unsuspecting victim. That's just harsh reality when we buy rolling metal.
How'd you do on your trade in values?
