SCCA Racing

1st off should this be in car talk? if so please move or kill.

2nd, who's all into this? I'd love to get started, but there is just SO much information out there. That and the midwest's website is kinda outdated... I'd love to go to one of the St. Louis Solo II races, but i'd at least to know a little bit of what's going on., or better yet find somebody from the forum at one of the races... Tips, suggestions, threats?

Check here:

http://www.myautoevents.com/pls/mae/frmMain.Show

Use the AutoCross link to find events in your area. A lot of the SCCA regions/chapter post events here.

I am not "into" it, but have run a couple of events.

MichaelBenz (mostly in the 3G TL forum) runs a lot and is some sort of officer in the Indy Section. Maybe a PM to him?

You might want to check to see if there are organizations around your area you can race with. This will allow for you to see a yearly schedule in advance so you can plan for any event earlier. Although not all of them will have a posted schedule that far in advance. From my experience it's been 50/50.

Edit: I've never done any SCCA event as I was always under the assumption they deal with coned tracks (i'm not sure if that's true or not). I personally prefer to race on actual tracks.

look for your local SCCA. Ask around if you cant find one. They will have all the necessary info and help for you.

Well, I'm sure my 2.2 Cl is setup for track events! So I was looking for the conned solo events because of the limited cost/effort to get started. But I'll just have to man up and show up...

I used to do SCCA for Autocross.

But I believe the SCCA has many other sancitoned events including road course.

They were a lot of fun...but you have to watch the cliques and the politics...some people take it all too seriously and make this their life. And many have been doing it for YEARS and have theirs kids and kids kids in it. They are the real pains.

Mainly, get in, do your own thing, and have fun.

That's what I did. Cost $35 as a non-member. The $10 premium (over memebr rates) was for a "week-end" membership. It was cool - bunch of car people who want to have fun. That was the only cost - other than a little wear-and-tear and some cone-rash.

Depending on the local SCCA Section they may or may not run PDX/HPDE - that's real track days, but without the need for a competition rating/license. Our's runs Time Trials and Hill Climbs, but no PDX/HPDE.

I don't have the time, energy or money to create a puropsoe built car and qualify for licensicing for Time Trials or Hill Climbs.

Regards track events - use the link I gave you. Many Motorsports park have track days throughout the year. Local clubs and/or local organizers get them together. Around here the going rate is ~$225/day and that includes a (required) ride-a-loing instructor for "rookies".

I just went to "solo school" last weekend and had a blast. For $55 I got 20 runs through the coned course, professionally timed, with an instructor in the car. Actually 2 different instructors - one in the morning, one in the afternoon.

Each instructor also took the wheel for a couple of runs to "show me how it's done".

I had a blast!

As mentioned above, find the local SCCA organization in your area and talk to them about events, rules, classes, etc.

I also suggest that you get a subscription to Grassroots Motorsports magazine...it's an awesome publication about road racing and autocross at the "grassroots" level...actually it's my absolute favorite automotive magazine http://grassrootsmotorsports.com/

That's an awesome site. They have racing every year and the car you enter must not cost more than the year, so this year it's a $2008 limit. A friend of mine bought an old supra and is entering it, or already did, not so sure about the progress of the event

That's a pretty good price, The st. louis school is $250 Which is pretty standard it seems (My boss runs the equivilent instruction classes for GT Bikes).

It was actually only $40, but they require you to buy a $15 temporary SCCA membership. Are you sure the $250 package is a solo coned course? That sounds more like track time.

If you do go, be prepared to put about 5k miles worth of wear on your tires in the course of 10 miles. And take a gauge and pump - you can do a surprising amount of between run tuning with just tire pressures.

We might not be talking about the same thing.

SCCA AutoX school here was $60. And that inluded the "week end" membership cost.

If it is the Evolution school for auto-x, $250 for the weekend is about right. Evolution school and auto-x school are different. Auto-x schools that cost about $60 depending on the local clubs are more like introduction to auto-x type school with some on course instructions. Evolution schools are more for those who have some experiences on auto-x but want to fine tune their skills.

Nice, new girl at work and her fiance do the SOLO races, so I think I at least found someone to hang with.
