S2K & Miata

the black one is gorgeous!! black with leather and hardtop looks like a much higher end car than any other configuration. but methinks 28k could be lowered, seeing as how a new one off the lot could be slashed a few grand.

i would have to downshift to 5th 60mph in my s2000 to get the similar acceleration as my G37 in 6th at 60mph but the G37 has almost double the torque than Miata and at a lower RPM

And yeah.. I think 28k is way too high for it. I really don't know what would be the good deal on this car with this mileage.

Saying goodbye to the 2.3 turbo already? Damn. At least you're considering moving to another Mazda. I seem to feel this strong Mazda community bond now that I own one lol.
FWIW, I'd list the MS3 on one of the mazdaspeed forums. Talking from experience, I went WAY out of my way to find the right car, so the same could be said for yours. If you find the right buyer willing to make arrangements it migth be worth spending the time writing up an ad. Then again you're in SoCal so I can't imagine it'd take you long to find a buyer.

Why was top speed even brought up in this conversation
I don't think the Miata or S2000's forte is record setting salt flat runs. Not sure anyone cares either.
A somewhat important factor is theft. I don't think people steal Miata seats, at least not that I know of. On the other hand, I don't feel safe with parking an S2000 outside, which is part of the reason why I don't have one.

Brings me to my next point...the S2K is MUCH more performance oriented as far as the seats go. The Miata has always been really lacking in that dept. I think the folks at Mazda were trying to cater to a much broader demographic than that of an S2K. I would love to one day see a more "hardcore" Miata from Mazda.

I dunno...someone thought it had a speed limiter. How common is S2K seat theft?

As for the seats being more performance oriented, I agree 100%. Getting into my S2k, my frame (200/5'10) was a tight fit into the seat. The thigh bolsters are so aggressive, my cheeks would be sitting on the bolsters, not in the seat. I would have to wiggle my bottom to get more comfortably in the seat. The Miata definitly had a more forgiving seat. I had both ('99 Miata/'06 S2K), granted the Miata was the older body, it was still a lot of fun to drive. If I had a complaint about it, it would be lack of power. Clutch/shifter is very easy and precise. BUT The S2k is definitely the better (if not best shifter out there) of the two. I don't have time to do a detailed comparison, but to sum it up, IMO, whatever the Miata does well, the S2k does better. The Miata was fun to drive, the S2k was intoxicating to drive (especially at full boil).
Now that Lotus Elise shifter? It reminds me of the Scion xB I had. Sh!t.
'nuff said.

I agree 100%.
Stock for stock its a no brainer. S2K all the way. It takes a modified MX5 to match the performance of an S2K, but it can be easily done. That being said, when comparing the NC to an S2K, the differences are marginal. It starts getting to be where you are comparing apples to apples.
...and I dont know WTF they were thinking on the Elise shifters. I'll never forget doing a drive down in Austin with a few of them and one guys shifter broke completely off. He was driving down the road doing 60 with the entire linkage in his hand raised out the roof.

I am probably too late to respond in this thread, since the decision for the MX-5 has been already made. I've been traveling and so couldn't give you the S2000 owner's standpoint.
I personally the newer MX-5s myself. However...
There is nothing, and I mean nothing, like listening to an AP1 S2000 with F20 engine SCREAMING at 9k rpm. The AP2 at 8k rpm is really close but not quite the same.
Yes, it is a little twitchy, but the AP2s (2004-2009) have a changed suspension to make that less of a problem. Further, then 2006-2009s have traction control standard, so that along with the improved torque curve of the F22 engine, makes it a tolerable daily driver.
The choice of S2000 or MX-5 simply depends on how much you want to spend and your opinion on the aural experience.
This is the video that convinced me to purchase an S2000:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nl5cFzcZ8YY
And here's my LONG exhaust video...just skip the first 3-4 minutes and you'll hear lots of VTEC....

But they offered $32k for it. Isn't this really high considering it's a 4 years old car?
They do have 2008 white MX-5 Touring soft top with 5,500 miles for $21,988.

BTW, that white mx-5 and the s2k are on the same lot... I should go check it out. What would be a good deal for that s2k? KBB's retail pricing on that is $28k.

The theft problem is very common, people want s2000's steering wheel, seats, headlights/projectors.
i am not sure about "The best shifter in any production cars" but it is definitely top 3.
i bought my 07 Honda Certified last year for 23k with 29k miles. Since the s2000 was discontinued in 09, the resale value/price for used s2000 is very high. For example, i bought my 05 in 05 brand new for 32k OTD. Now most of 08 used with low miles cost about 28k+ tax which is about 31k OTD... 07 honda certified are still going over $20k in most cases.
Also, color plays a big role in used s2k prices. White with any interior color will cost you more (in the thousands), LBP is 2nd. Silver and Suzuka blue are the cheapest

I wouldn't be so quick to judge...I thought I hated them, until I drove a pretty heavily modified one.
It was putting 300hp to the wheels (pic below)...it wasn't quite as nimble, but damn it was fun. The power, the snug cockpit, the intoxicating blow off....I think he only spent probably $3000 getting it to how it sits with the exhuast, wheels/tires, intake tune and blowoff.
I dont care for the Saturns styling and getting in and out to put your top up/down sucks. Not having any trunk space sucks too.

I've never driven the previous model miatas, but I did read on the forum that NCs are substantially faster.
However, I think my MS3 feels 10 times faster in the straightline.. My MS3 has been running stronger than ever with revisions on the map.
The S2K that I found is black color with black interior. I looked through the carfax and the original owner leased it and put like 650 miles per year... And I have to say it's not a 4 years old, it's more like a 3 years old.
I'm going to try to low ball it to the internet sales manager just for the heck of it. Maybe like $29k OTD.
On the other hand, the white MX-5 with 5k miles seems like a good price. But now that you guys talk about seat thefts.. I'm kinda leaning toward the hardtops..

I saw this youtube review of MX-5 NC that was led by these two guys. One guy was saying stuff about the hardtop convertible, how it is the fastest hardtop (12 seconds) in the industry. Then the other guy with old Miata busted open the softtop in like .5 secs. Thought that was funny.
