Run Flat Tires Are Amazing (Aftermath Pic)
Run Flat Tires Are Amazing (Aftermath Pic)
Well, was driving on the highway at 60 +mph and I suddenly notice a black metal object that must have fell out of a truck. Had someone on my right and left and had no option but to run it over. I was hoping it would have been soft, but it was solid steel. Heard a loud bang and had a good jolt, but drove off without losing control. The information display said "tire flat, max speed 55 mph." The steering was shaking a bit but was still able to drive to the dealer at highway speed. I didnt want to stop and just kept driving. Once I got to the dealer, I COULD NOT believe my eyes!! A hole my FIST FIT IN was present on a cracked rim all the way to the inner barrel!! I could not believe I was able to continue driving as if it was a simple puncture. Looking back, if this was a normal tire, I may have lost control and could have had a complete disaster.
They really should consider putting run flats across a broader range of vehicles instead of just performance cars without a spare. Probably cost prohibative, but worth every penny when considering the reduced hazard.

Along with a stiffer sidewall, their reduced performance aspect from being quite a bit heavier and the MPG hit all make them quite a bit less attractive to car makers. You should see how many people with BMW's with the standard runflats switch out to regular tires as soon as they can.
That is a good amount of damage though! Next time that happens, pull over and call the state trooper office and they will dispatch a unit to remove whatever object it is and as well try to figure out where it came from. Also you can get a report for your insurance company incase the damage is beyond just the tire and wheel.

Yea, it's even worse in person. The angle/quality of the pic underscores the size of the damage to the tire. Just thankful the tire held up allowing me to drive away safely and not lose control of the vehicle. Thanks.
The plastic inner fenderwall and an attached brake cooling duct have to be replaced. The object moved off to the side after I hit it not damaging the body. Suspension and components appear to have held up, but the dealer is going to inspect everything. Once again, just thankful this wasnt a huge wreck.

Personally I am not a fan of runflat tires. Too costly to replace and the ride quality is terrible. IMO
I drove pretty far on my Run Flats on my BMW. But thank god I got the tire warranty. They were around $450-$500 a pop. I paid $1000 for the warranty and pretty much got them replaced for $20
Heh...You're not the only one.. https://acurazine.com/forums/car-talk-5/reason-24862-why-i-hate-brooklyn-819563/

Yep, it wasn't the most pleasant experience, but I did take it to about 50 mph for the 16 miles on the highway, then the mile or 2 on the main roads until I got to my friends shop.
It probably did make a difference in control but I hate the RFT's on my car. Much thicker and heavier than a regular non-RFT performance tire. They degrade overall handling and ride quality noticeably. And they cost $$$ to replace.
