Are roof racks a styling trend now?

I see so many of them on Hondas and other cars nowadays, what's the deal? Is everyone just suddenly getting more active.

Am I the only one noticing this?

Its just that I have never seen so many as I'm seeing this past season. At car shows and everything. It's weird.

It's a stupid fad Honda & VW owners are doing. 90% of the Honda owners have nothing on them ever, & half the VW guys just try to throw as much random shit on top to look cool.

I actually thought this was a fad in the early 2000's. I used to see a lot of Jetta's and A4's with roof racks. Whether they were used or not was anyone's guess. I really don't see much of it now. Most of the people I see now have a mountain bike or road bike strapped to the rack... so they're using it!

Yeah it's a thing mostly with Honda Accord and VW Jetta/Golf/Passat guys.

It's ugly and pointless, but whatever.

I've noticed that as well. If you have a roof rack on your car, you should have a bike on it, no reason otherwise. They are pretty easy to take off so please don't be a poseur, especially if it's for looks only. Just like the bug deflectors on the hoods. Some of the Accords on the other forum I visit have them strictly for looks. Really?

There's definitely a fad out there people are following.

I use mine to haul my mountain bike around, it's not for show, although it does look mighty good.

The only good kind of roof rack is one used to haul snowboards, the people driving with bike racks here are the same morons who ride their bikes on the street and then fail to realize you're required to obey the rules of the road if you ride a bike on the street.

Yup. Most of the time when it's on a Honda, there's nothing on it. If it's someone who looks ~28 and under I assume that they're doing it to look cool :ghey:

We have our share of idiots riding bikes on the road where the riders ride side by side taking up an entire lane, but I wouldn't go as far to say that anyone with a bike rack doesn't pay attention to road rules.

the bike attachments seem to be stylin now too. I was at a car meet and let's be serious, you know when someone (sometimes) doesn't do something. People who have strobe lights on their car, look like they sell drugs and have modded geo prizms, most likely don't go mountain biking on a regular basis, if at all.

It is a stupid trend there was this one car that bolt the front end of a mountain bike to the top of his roof. The things some people do to think its cool.

I'm cheap and my car can fit it, so I just take off the front wheel, fold down the back seat and stuff my mountain bike back there. Hatchbacks ftw!

I'm so cool that I don't even need a roof rack

LoL when you said driving a Honda and under 28 with roof racks I was like WTF he saw me driving (I haven't been over to the eastside in a minute), add the dog and tinted windows you'd pretty much have it all down.

No trend here. I rock mine for a reason. And yes, my fairing is dry CF.

Looks sick! I want a legacy wagon

I think if you have a use for your rack, they look sweet on cars. But buying one for the sake of "looking cool" just pisses me off.

My friend refuses to acknowledge it as a trend, and in turn tries to make me look like a judgmental asshole. This FAT thugged out guy at a car show with a slammed accord wagon with a half-primered/half-painted body kit had a bike rack on his car, clearly, it was for aesthetic reasons. My friend's response, "Fat people can mountain bike too..."

Don't get all high and mighty on me!

Your car is looking awesome as usual. What type of rack is that? Looks a little like a Yakima, but can't tell for certain. If it is a Yakima, where'd you get that CF Fairing?

As for the rack, it's a Standard Yakima rack with two SprocketRocket fork mount carriers. Just installed the second one a few weeks ago when one of my buddies started joining me on my rides. I could have probably gone without the rack and just folded down my rear seat, but there's no way two bikes would have fit in that fashion, and I also wanted to avoid getting my car dirty on the inside so I opted for the roof rack.

Here's the latest pic (minus the new carrier):

Here's an a$$ shot lol:

You can say what you want about my roof rack but the fact is it's like 10x better than your roof rack and it's like a friggin drunken cougar magnet.

I always thought roof racks on older VW bugs looked nice , usually they are made out of wood and it adds a vintage look to it (this accessory always seemed like a must have in the older v-dub crowds). Also, they were used to haul luggage and not bikes, snowboards, etc.. I have considered putting a Bavarian roof rack on my E28, not sure if I'm going to go through with it.
