Rip It Out Yourself Junkyards - Gone???
Rip It Out Yourself Junkyards - Gone???
Having more time than money these days, I was looking for a way to get the TL bluetooth module for less than the $600 the dealer wants.
So, back in '39 before the war, you could go to a junkyard and rip out the part you wanted and pay for it. I can't seem to find any of these anymore. Do any such critters still exist - particularly in the Tampa Bay area?
Thanks,
Steve

The last time I ever went to one of those was in the 90's. I needed some parts for a Camry. I got some parts for my Maxima from a junkyard in Newark, NJ a couple years ago. But for the most part the internet and e-bay killed a lot of those.

I went to one years ago with my dad, but I don't remember where it was.
I definitely can see the insurance side of it. We would walk down "aisles" of cars stacked like 5 cars high. it doesn't seem that high, but then you would see people climbing into them and tugging and yanking, and the whole thing was shaking

try this site, the best one i have ever seen

the way junkyards work is this;
The newer cars are held in one area accessable to only employees, or when employees take you around in their yard truck.
your older cars are in the u-pull it section where you can freely roam and take whatever parts you need and then pay for them. you will find alot of your 5-7 year old cheaper korean and domestic cars that have been stripped of most useable parts. Most older foreign cars are usually 10+ years old when in the scrapyard.
most of the forein ones have either been in a wreck or have 300k miles on em.
Domestics usually are trashed and have 120k on them.
You can really tell alot about cars from spending some time there, and back in the day, i did.
the u-pull it's are cheaper to get parts since the employees do not pull the parts. they only let you in and charge you for the parts you take.
the other more expensive section, they can control the parts that leave.

There's a u-pull-it down here.
But yeah your not going to find anything remotely new in these places. Insurance write offs of newer cars go to independent shops or get resold as salvage to fix.
