Recognizing Headlights in Your Rearview at Night?

I do a lot of driving on the highways and find my mind wandering. So to keep myself busy I try testing how well I can recognize cars. (Ya, I'm that lame)

It works best at night, I try seeing if I can recognize the car coming up behind me based on the headlights. It's surprising how recognizable cars are depending on foglight placement or how blue or yellow the lights are, etc..

Not sure if I'm the only weirdo who does odd things like this when they're driving solo. Long gone are my highschool days of playing strip padiddle with the easy girl at school. I tried playing it alone one day on my drive back across PA but it doesn't have the same allure as it does when you have a girl in the passenger seat. lol.

Good day kind gentlemen!

I have always done this. The front of cars and headlights are like faces to me. I always try to recognize them.

Same thing with taillights off in the distance.

as others have stated, i do it too but mostly with cop cars lol. definitely has saved me quite a few times. and still boggles my mind when a cop is in the left lane and some idiot is driving slow in front of him and wont move over. I would never be that guy lol

Been doing this since I can remember. I'm only wrong 1% of the time. Usually aftermarket hid's or something like that.

Always done this since I was a kid. I'm not as good as I used to be but I'm still able to recognize 90%+ of the cars out there.

I've actually done this ever since I was a little kid...though back then it was during day or night. I would try to name the car with just a small glimpse of it.

Ive always done this since ive been driving,

i can recognize most cars by either their headlights or tailights

Or sometimes if theyre tailgaiting me so close,

i can tell what car it is by their side mirrors/body lines (obviously during the day for that)

Am I the only one who slows down when I see an 08-12 Accord thinking it's a Charger? There lights are pretty similar to me.

The '99 through '05 Jetta always fools me at night when they come up behind me because they always look like Crown Vic headlights.

Count me in. Doing it for many years. However, I find it more difficult to recognize newer models due to more manufacturers. It was easier in the 80's-90's, less models to guess.

on all counts. Been doing it since day one. Always good to be aware of what cars are around you, especially if you're looking for LEOs. I usually do it for fun since I don't speed much (usually keep it 5-9 mph over) when going on trips. When commuting there usually are not many cops, so just passes the 10 minutes or so driving from the house to the train, then vice-versa on the way home...
