Real men drive stick

An automatic transmission is a fine accessory to have -- if you consider the application of concealer to be a vital part of your daily routine. Automatic transmissions are for those who find driving to be a confusing task, for those who need to focus 100% on pushing one pedal, but unfortunately find themselves frequently distracted by things like cell phones, makeup, favorite food items, and things that are shiny. One of the obvious downsides to this propensity to distraction is, when it comes time for these drivers to gently tug the steering wheel to either the left or right, they end up crashing into moving cars, parked cars or anything in their immediate vicinity.

Rather than admit that driving is a skill that needs to be practiced and mastered, the people who favor automatic transmissions blame their poor driving skills on everyone and everything else. “The tree jumped out into the middle of the road!” they will exclaim, quickly followed by a cry of, “There was no way to avoid it!” Of course, these drivers will be sure to omit the fact that they were texting, checking their lip gloss, and/or trying to master the use of the sippy cup holding their double tall nonfat chai latte.

You’ll never see a real man commit any of the driving atrocities mentioned above, because real men drive cars with manual transmissions. Real men understand that cars need three pedals, otherwise the vehicle is nothing more than a fancy golf cart. Men understand that driving is a skill, and that the best way to master this skill is to maintain absolute control of all aspects of a car at all times. If you think it’s better to let the car tell you what to do, you may as well turn in your testicles so that they don’t get in the way of your marathon sessions of watching The View.

Someone surely got excited by our mention of The View, and it is to this person we humbly suggest that they put down the Appletini and check out our list of the top 10 reasons real men drive stick.

Unless you're one of those men that analyzed the cost difference in trading in a manual car vs. an automatic car, and realize that people with manuals won't get nearly enough for their trade-in as automatics.

10 years ago I would have agreed completely, 5 years ago I would have said there are exceptions that automatics are better but today I think it boils down to the specific car you are looking at and then you have to consider automated-manuals. Not to mention those who think it's manly to drive a stick in a big city, that's not manly, that's down right dumb!

I tried reading that article, but the flurry of pop-up ads and ad-insertions hurt my brain.

Not sure how my day would be improved by reading the whole thing anyway.

I definitely think it depends on the car; for a sports car I'd much rather have a manual, for a luxury car, auto.

Nice av cochese, Nique used to be one of my favorite players back in the day.

driving stick in the city ftl.

an automatic and manual each have their place. The new porsche pdk is supposed to be rediculous and quick as hell.

I am glad that i have an automatic since i had surgery tuesday on my knee. I wouldn't be able to drive too well with stick.

It was a CTS-V automatic that got the production sedan record around the Nurburgring. Enough said.

That said, driving stick is definitely a useful skill to have in an emergency.

What I find amusing is that a high percentage of those who drive a manual, do not do it properly. Driving a manual is not merely clutching and shifting.

As much as I miss driving an MT, I don't miss it at all on the rush hour drive home.

i think the article is highlighting the whole masculinity factor in driving a stick more than the performance factor.

of course this isnt gospel, but like i said. it was a funny read

I did the Mississauga (almost Halton Hills) <-> North York commute for a month and I dearly missed my TL-S (auto) during that commute. But down here in Windsor (or on the 401 drive TO <-> Windsor) ... that's when I appreciated having a 6MT.

But to all others who have posted ... driving a stick in big city traffic ... I'd rather be womanly with an automatic than 'manly' with a stick.

I supposed I was 'man' enough to choose drive auto in LA/OC traffic.

My wife and sister could drive manual well and probably drive it better than 75% of the people saying driving stick is 'masculine'.

Not to take the thread off topic, but I find a woman who can drive a manual correctly incredibly sexy.

+1 My wife absolutely loved driving her MX-5 mainly because it was stick as well. She would always make remarks if I wasn't shifting correctly.

Real men don't drive F1 cars?

I'm a pragmatist and I'm ok with whatever gives the best results. I guess if you're REALLY insecure you'll also get manual windows, not like those pussies who open them with a press of a button.
