Real men drive stick

Its a whole different thing if you're a man and you don't know how to drive stick. That is one part I agreed with.... you simply can't call yourself a man if you don't know how to drive one. especially if you take a girl out and she wants to drive, then ends up getting piss drunk and you can't drive her home since her car is manual... that's embarrassing. I would feel totally emasculated.
Personally I just can't drive an automatic car for an extended period of time. It drives me nuts and I'll crave pushing in the clutch and shifting myself. I really could care less about dual-clutch transmissions, of course they are a lot better than automatics but they simply can't match the enjoyment of rowing the gears, even if DCTs are much faster.
I recently sprained my right wrist and am waiting on the results of some x-rays to see if I broke anything. Still... I changed up my shifting style and I drive car anyways because I just can't go without shifting.

The other issue with choosing an auto over a manual is if the manual transmission is not very well sorted or annoying during driving.
I'd choose a manual TSX, RX-8 or Miata over an auto (actually wouldn't even look at any with an auto), BUT I would get an auto 335i or G37 instead of the manual versions because of my dislike of their shifter feel and clutch release points.
OTOH, my wife may make me get another auto tranny car instead of a stick shift or she'll beat me within an inch of my worthless life.

I've never had the chance or a reason to learn to drive a manual. I really wish I knew, though. My friend is picking up a manual honda or toyota this week or so, so maybe he can finally show me the ropes.

If it's not a 911 turbo, I'll take mine with a manual transmission please. Anything that is approaching the 500hp mark is really more fun (imo) with an auto/pdk/dual clutch/sportshift. Having driven both 6mt and tiptronic 911 turbos, my experience in a 6mt is fun but when trying to accelerate full force, you spend more time staring down your tach then enjoying the power pushing you back in the seat. To do the same in a tiptronic is an intoxicating driving experience that you fully enjoy until you are too scared to keep the gas pedal down.

Of course, I find my gf extremely sexy because she knows how to correctly drive a manual. Heck, she owns a S2K!

If you live where you are bumper to bumper, or stop light to stoplight at 40 Km/h or less, a stick is pointless. They have their place, and daily commutes that involve traffic is not one of them.
So if a guy has a Porsche 911 with their new auto, they're not real men? GTFO.

for a luxury car I say auto is fine. But when you go into sports cars, I say manual. I mean sporty cars, not 200 000$ porsches and shit like that. My buddy got himself a nice 2009 g37s coupe, in white, black interior, just sexy. Then he opened the door and I saw auto tranny, what a disapointment. those cars I feel need to be manual

I drive my car in the "big city" everyday and much prefer my new manual integra to my old auto tl.
I learned how to drive stick with this car too and feel it is the much more proper transmission for an older economy car.
I am also currently teaching my gf how to drive manual. scary.

I didn't drive G in manual so I can't compare. I drove his auto though and I liked it I can't say I didn't but I would have loved it if it was a stick. And he didn't even test drive the stick becuase his parents told him not to. He works for his dad and he was 19 at the time so they controlled how he spent his money I guess. Then after he kept saying how he didn't wanna buy a stick because he didn't know how to drive it properly and he didn't wanna wreck his new car trying to learn. bs excuse if you ask me but he has to live with it. now he is regreting it.

But honestly, if you are hell bent on owning a manual, I don't think the G is for you. If I was shopping in that class and insisted on having a manual I would be all over a 3 series.

That's kind of a sad story which I can relate to, when I was about the same age as your friend my father influenced a car purchasing decision that I regretted almost immediately. Thankfully for your friend the G is still a great car, I was stuck with fucking Cadillac Catera!

if it were me in his position, I would have went with the 335 mt for sure over the G.

One on the right for me
I might have agreed with this a few years ago, before I got a job with a 45 min commute in traffic. And having a g/f who lives in SF. Love the manual, but shit an auto is soooo much easier to deal with

I've been driving an auto (rental) since my car's in the body shop, and I'm amazed at how idle my brain feels when driving it. It's not a bad thing -- I almost want to swap my car for an auto so I can save my meager brainpower for other things.

A-TSX Oldie
Am I odd for wanting a nice luxurious car with a real stick? I miss the days when the 7 series was available with a third pedal (that's not the parking brake).
Now if the Lexus LS460 was mated to the TSX/S2K 6MT, that would be heaven.

oh, I think the CTS-V with a manual is one of the best prospects. You can also spring for an M5, but that's just a little bit more.

Regardless, the most manly apology to you sir.

^^no worries, got a good laugh out of it.
back to the convo....what is a pure driver's car anyways these days?
Power steering, automatic transmissions (autoclutches too), traction control, etc. Even todays properly setup sports car is a bunch of compromises for comfort and safety anyways. Why is the tranny the big point of contention....heated seats, power windows, sound deadening...how is this so different from a transmission? Each puts us one level away from the road anyways.

Funny you should mention it, my car has no traction control, heated seats, and if it counts, just a bunch of carpet and plastic as sound deadener. and I like to roll down the windows for even more air on nice days so there's no way in hell I'm getting roll-ups unless it's an all out race car... in that case it probably won't even have windows, just lexan.
and depending on the car, I like a manual steering rack. If my car wasn't such a pig and the front tires were skinnier, I'd do it. Safety is a funny thing. I don't want to be in a deathtrap, but I don't ever want to be in an accident, so the car needs to be safe at least. All the options are nice, but I need the basic things like A/C, heater, and ABS, just in case.
IMO a pure driver's car isn't necessarily defined by what options it has but how much it engages you in the driving experience. I think the S2000 is a great example of a driver's car. The steering wheel feels like it moves the road more than it moves the car. Wherever you point it, it goes.
