1863 original miles... too bad that thing looks like a space ship. Today, 700+K for a 1980... wonder what the hell the original price of that thing was???

They should give you a Hawaiian shirt, Tigers cap and faux mustache when you buy that.

Nice car. Not worth the $. Rather useless car since you can't drive it because it's so rare. It would kill the value.

The seller seem to be a pompous ass by his answers to some questions.

Mine too. I recall reading something many years ago that a lot of ferrari enthusiasts originally didn't like the car, feeling it looked a little too similar to a "lowly" 308.

''Even though the original asking price for the 288GTO was around $80,000 during the ’80s, small production numbers and the cars’ exotic background soon drove values into the million dollar region. Today the 288GTO remains as one of the most sought after ‘modern’ Ferraris. With only 273 288GTOs produced, it is rare even by Ferrari standards – in 2004 one sold for US$302,500, and many ‘ordinary’ 308s have been modified to make them look like ‘real’ GTOs.''

I wonder if this is actually a replica. It's not directly mentioned, but it's referred to as a 1980 Ferrari: 288 GTO 1985 288 GTO in the sale title, and also the year is listed as 1980 in the vehicle description

^^For 712K I doubt it's just a kitted 308. Under the vehicle description it clearly states its a 1985 and there is also a s/n on there.

I dont think its 1 private owner. Regaurdless someone is going to snatch it up purley for the exclusivity of the car.

That's a hugely ambitious price for that car, considering another "finest 1985 288 GTO in the world" (SN:57701) with 1,230km on the clock sold at auction in Maranello last may for $590,000.

PLUS, that car came with a full marque specialist go-through of all important systems, something that certainly cost upwards of $20,000, possibly much more....a bonus not mentioned in the ebay auction.

How this car is worth over $120,000 more than 57701 would need to be explained very very clearly and consisely to any serious collector.

one of my fav F-cars.. but dang if I had that much to spend, I'd be looking at F50's, like this one:

http://www.citilink.com/~jch/f50/

no seriously - real ones. they are going for right around the same range (or less).

As nice as the 308 was, the 288 is a beast.

I'm no expert but doesn't that interior look a little tired for 1800 miles (even if it's 27 years old).

I thought exactly the same. e.g. the carpet by the footwell. And the thing with 1980 and 1985 didn't sit well in my stomach either, and in general that ad came off a bit fishy.

beauty of a car. i've always loved these things.

you guys are also worried about the 80 85 thing like its the end of the world.

i'm sure its a quick call to ferrari to make sure the serial is authentic.

idk, nice fucking car. if i had 712k to blow on this, i would. in a heart beat. just thing of all the maintense costs from driving this thing just once. I'm sure its not cheap, plus insurance. fuck.

Wow. Last bid came in at $712,100.00 and the reserve still wasn't met. How much did this guy really expect to get for it?

It's a nice car, but definitely not worth more than $712,100.00. Then again, it's not even worth $712,100.00 IMO.

question is does it really matter what we think its worth? are we a bunch of ferrari collectors? non of us are coming close to being able to think about be able to think about being able to pay that much for car. most of our houses aren't even worth that much.

this thing is 1 of 272. defiantly low mileage, even for rare car standards, its also, one of the most rarest road going modern ferrari's.

just my 2 cents. i think the seller has his right to ask what ever the fuck he wants for it. find me another one for sell with less miles, priced cheaper.

See post #17 of this thread for that, although the car already sold.

Here's another.....which sold for less than half the price with 11,000 miles, a full engine teardown and rebuild (!), and other expensive work.

http://www.ferraris-online.com/pages...E-288GTO-54231

Hey, I agree with you; the seller can ask whatever the hell they want. Doesn't mean they'll get it....or get razzed for trying to shoot the moon with the price. When sellers start using phrases like 'best example in the world', its open season. Better PROVE that kind of talk, or get tarred and feathered.

I'm sure Keith Martin's Sports Car Market will weigh in at some point, and then we'll all see what it is REALLY worth.

Cheers,
-Mirror

I think its safe to say that the vast majority of the Ferrari collecting world would agree with you.

Ya never know though, this model is on the move and maybe someone out there just HAS to have it. Sure as hell wouldn't be the first time....
