Range Rover's Unreliability..

I know Range Rovers have horrible reliability ratings. I used to have a lot of articles and sources of that fact. But for some reason, I can't locate them well.. Please help me out! If you have any articles or stats or sources that demonstrate how horrible RR's reliability is, please let me know!

Thanks!

Grab a Consumer Reports annual auto issue, it has the reliability ratings of most makes/models. I believe it's the April issue each year.

Check the Automotive News forum on AZ-- look at the JD Power and reliability survey threads for quotes of various articles.

Consumer Reports' Annual Auto Edition will summarize problem areas on the most recent 5 or so years of Range Rover models-- mostly fully-filled black dots (i.e." from the POS").

Take a look at MSN Autos or Yahoo Autos sites-- they cite reliability projections and history for each new and used vehicle model, IIRC.

With fluid changes they'll run forever, but every little thing will break along the way.

2003-2009 LAND ROVER RANGE ROVER ▼

CG Rating
59 out of 100

Our reliability study for this generation Land Rover Range Rover includes details on average repair costs, manufacturer recalls, and everything you need to know to gauge the long-term reliability of this generation Land Rover Range Rover .
TROUBLE SPOTS
Consumer Guide's® Auto Editors have scoured repair bulletins and questioned mechanics to search for commonly occurring problems for a particular vehicle. In some cases we also give possible manufacturer-suggested solutions. In many instances these trouble spots are Technical Service Bulletins posted by the manufacturer, however, we have our own expert looking at additional vehicle problems.

Accessory belt: Chirping under the hood is caused by a bad accessory drive belt idler pulley. (2005-07)

Dashboard lights: A check coolant level warning light may come on if the antifreeze/water mixture is not a 50/50 ratio. Also, if the blue antifreeze is mixed with orange antifreeze, cylinder heads and cooling system components can be damaged. (2003-06)

Engine fan: Screeching noise from under hood comes from defected cooling fan on engine control module. (2007)

Engine noise: A noise (clunk) when the throttle is released and applied, that sounds like driveshaft play, is actually in the 4.4L engine powertrain control module program which must be flashed. (2006-07)

Engine noise: The plastic idler pulley for the serpentine accessory drive belt may make a chirping noise and an improved pulley is available to replace it. (2003-05)

Fuel gauge: The fuel gauge may not read full after a fill-up, requiring reprogramming the instrument panel; may show full although the tank is empty due to a faulty fuel sending unit in the tank. (2003)

Fuel gauge: Intermittent fuel gauge due to faulty fuel level sender in tank. (2005)

Suspension problems: The air suspension may not maintain the proper height when cold if the battery voltage drops below 11 volts, or the pressure relief valve is frozen open, requiring replacement of the rear springs. The pressure switch may stick intermittently, and the pressure sensor may be faulty causing the warning lamp to glow. Less likely is a faulty electronic control unit. (2003-05)

Transmission problems: Transmission may exhibit a harsh downshift from second to first gear if the throttle is depressed at the time and the fix is reprogramming the transmission control module. (2005-07)

Water leak: The navigation system may quit, possibly along with the radio and Blue Tooth, due to water entering the nav unit. (2005-07)
CONSUMER GUIDE® ESTIMATED REPAIR COSTS
This table lists costs of likely repairs for comparison with other vehicles. The dollar amount includes the cost of the part(s) and labor (based on $50 per hour) for the typical repair without extras or add-ons. Like the pricing information, replacement costs can vary widely depending on region. Expect charges at a new-car dealership to be slightly higher.
Item Name Repair Cost
A/C Compressor $920
Alternator $580
Automatic Transmission or Transaxle $3,330
Brakes $540
Clutch, Pressure Plate, Bearing
Constant Velocity Joints $1,450
Exhaust System $930
Radiator $540
Shocks and/or Struts $920
Timing Chain or Belt $700

You can stop right there. Pretty much the same for ALL British/European vehicles.

It's a shame they're so unreliable too because they look great. My neighbor has the RR Autobiography and I'm always drooling everytime it's outside.

My uncle has a 2008 with 17k miles on it. So far only one problem - navigation freezing, the dealer replaced the drive and problem solved.

Good info! Thanks guys!

My boss is getting a new car next month, and he's keep on insisting to get the Ranger Rover Supercharged. I told him, it's known for its horrible reliability. But he's not listening..

It's his money. When people ask for my advice, I give it. Otherwise people need to learn from their own mistakes.

Keep insisting NOT to get it!!

My mom has the 2010 RRS Supercharged, and we had a problem within the first couple hours of picking it up from the dealer. I took it to the dealer a couple days later and it took them 3 hours to find the problem. It turned out to the be a "Leak Detection Pump". I had them order the part and it took them another 3 hours on the next visit to replace it.

Another problem we had was that the truck wouldnt start sometimes. Took it to the dealer once more and they said there was a software recall and it needed to be updated. Made an appointment and it took 4-5 hours to update the software. Hasn't done it since.

Just recently, we've had another problem with the audio components not wanting to work for a couple hours. Its happened about 2-3 times since getting the truck in Feb '10. Everything would work fine, there was just no sound coming out of the speakers. Made another appointment because they said the radio software was due for an update. It took about 3 hours for them to finish the updating. This was yesterday.

Now let me remind you, it hasn't even been a year yet. Luckily, everything was covered under warranty.

Now dont get me wrong, this truck is sooo much fun to drive. Its amazingly fast for a 6000lb truck. That 510hp V8 Supercharged engine really gets the job done. Its a blast to drive but too many problems IMO.

If I could afford a new RRS I'd definitely buy one. The older 4.0 RR's were junk just like the LR Discovery's, then the Disco II's came out (which I own) and they were a lot less trouble free. For some reason it takes the British a long time to tune a vehicle and get things right and they made the engine and transmission bulletproof and stopped there. The old RR's had the British Lucas electrical system that always failed.

When Ford bought Land Rover in 2000, they started switching over to Bosch and this greatly improved the electrical system, which was the largest cause for reliability issues and gave LR and RR's their bad name. As in my previous post, the issues from Consumer Guide, most all issues stop at 2007. The Ford engineers tuned the whole vehicle and now they sold to Tata, they seem to be taking it in the right direction. Being in some Land Rover clubs, the Range Rover is reliable, but still isn't perfect, with maybe an airbag issue or switch problem from time to time.

My boss bought a RR supercharged westminster edition. He got it roughly 6 months ago. He loves it and hasn't had any problems with it so far. He got it preowned with the balance of the factory warranty. He keeps telling me to get the RRS supercharged. I want to get out of my infinity ex35 and get a rover but I'm concerned about reliability issues. It seems to me that either people have problems or they don't. But I won't get a car unless it's got a warranty and right now I can't afford a brand new one.

There used to be a saying for jaguar owners back in the day,

Buy two so you have one to drive while the other is in the shop. Same thing with rr.

Factory (Ferodo) Range Rover Supercharged brake pads are $295 complete set front and back. Dealer price to change including pads is around $650-$900, as most dealers are around $120hr service. Most dealers want to change at the 15k service and others at the 22.5k scheduled service. Supercharged rotors are $90.00 a piece, so a complete service pad and rotors may be a $1500 at most. My father-in-law has a RR Sport and his brakes were $750 to replace.

I just got my Discovery's brakes changed for $90 at local shop and my Disco has the same brakes as a Rover.

This brings back fond memories of the Rover loaner I got from the dealer when I had a leaky oil cooler replaced in my 911. The mileage was so poor that I ran it out of gas 5 minutes after the gas light came on.

There's a reason why JLR's are so cheap 2nd hand. I think only the Italians beat them in worst re-sale value.

I worked at a Land Rover dealer several years ago and they're not as bad as they used to be. Personally, I'm a total Range Rover hound and have been since I was 10 and can say those of us who really love them are more than willing to overlook their faults. If I won the lottery, my first stop would be Land Rover Portland to place an order for a Range Rover Supercharged.
