Are radar detectors becoming obsolete??

Jesal posted a thread about this a while ago, and I'm starting to notice more and more of these.

Those "Your speed is xx" things on the side of the road are displaying my speed, but my V1 is not picking up anything. I went past like 3 of these yesterday alone. I'm afraid that it's going to make its way into cruisers.

Anyone got any info on these?

I usually get a K-band reading for those well in advance on my S2. But to answer your question, law enforcement is working VERY HARD to make radar detectors obsolete. (....and the day that happens, I will get a radar/laser jammer on the DL.)

I have always thought they were a waste, its pretty easy to not need one, don't speed(excessively) and you don't have to even think about it. A wise man once told me "I never recieved a speeding ticket I didn't deserve" and to this day I've never been ticketed for speeding

I agree to a point. If you tell me that I deserve a ticket for going 45 mph on the Bronx River Parkway (because the limit is 40) you are insane. In Nashville, you really need work to get a ticket though.

I find myself driving less and less with the V1. Almost to the point where I may take it out of the car completely.

I usually get a very strong signal from the speed displayed radars, stronger than a cruiser. My radar detector has paid for itself many of times

But unfortunately that saying isn't necessarily true, my friend and I were in his moms new corolla w/ no tints at all a couple of years ago and we were going 25 in a 35 (I saw the speedometer, so that is 10 under), went by two parked cop cars on the sidewalk (one officer was already writing a ticket to someone else) and the other officer signaled us to stop, took about 30 minutes and then gave my friend a ticket for 51 in a 35! Other notes: about 4 p.m in full sunlight, we were both dressed nice and not ghetto, no other cars besides the one being ticketed, empty road, we didn't give him any attitude or anything.

Now that being said, I still have 0 tickets.

I don't understand... you got a ticket for going 51 in a 35, but was actually driving 25? You were going half the speed of what they wrote you up for? :confuse:

My friend got the ticket, but I was with him.

Yes you are correct, somehow we got a ticket for going for 16 mph over the speed limit, when we were actually going 10 under the speed limit! Thats why my friend and I were like WTF!

Overall, he definitely got F-ed in the A. Pretty much ticketed for DWY...Driving While Young.

I just warned my 16 y/o son about DWY yesterday. (Sidenote: For his benefit, I really need to do a better job for disguising my contempt for the police.)

Back on topic (and somewhat towards IS300eater's post), I tend not to speed anywhere near as much as in years past. (Having switched from an 02 Maxima to an 07 Accord makes that shift in driving habits easier. )

But, I will always carry a detector with me as I do NOT trust cops and will always want to know whether or not they are clocking.......irrespective of whether or not I am speeding.

I get frisky about once a month but, in general, I drive the speed limit just by instinct.

However, I am never without my radar detector. I always get a k-band warning when going near a "Your Speed Is" trailer. In fact, I get it several blocks ahead.

I have been traveling about 10 over on the Turnpike a few times when I got an alert and slowed down to the actual limit. I prolly wasn't in jeopardy but why take a chance? Better safe than sorry.

I haven't had a speeding ticket since the first night I was able to drive after dark. That was a while ago.

I have a friend in PA who drives like a maniac at 90+ constantly on the highways. He always uses a radar detector and credits it with hundreds of saves. Interestingly, his detector is about 10 years old and is an inexpensive off-brand.

I think the expensive ones are all hype.

I don't know, man. I've had like 4 different kinds of detectors in the recent past, and nothing comes even close to V1. I love them arrows and the early warning.

I didn't own one of those, but a close friend did. I drove and rode in his ITR quite often, so I actually got to experience it.

While it was good as far as radar detection goes, I couldn't stand the lack of arrows. I want to know where the radar signal is coming from.

Same here. I had an 8500, & it was pretty much = to the V1 performance. I felt the V1 had a little better range on KA however.

I sold my V1 last week.

No one around here uses radar any more. And while it has saved me a few times I couldn't stand the false alarms. I've had it for 4 years and I feel it has become obsolete. Especially with the increasing popularity of laser guided cruise control I would estimate that my false alarm-to-actual threat is 12:1 if not more. Police only use radar that is built into their cruisers around here and it's only the Maryland State Police. Local police and State police for that matter use laser only while setting up speed traps.

how do you know if the cops in your area use laser? Does it help if you see them hold the device and aim like a gun?

The legality of those is still under debate. The only reason why I do not have one is that the cost is still prohibitive.

A good friend of mine had a Blinder Extreme and said it worked pretty well. He had it in his 400 awhp S4, along with a V1 and never got a ticket. Not that he drives like crazy, anyway. Either way, he said it worked well until the front bumper got messed up. The laser jammer was installed within the bumper so it got destroyed, too.

He picked up a new one for 260. I'm thinking about getting one, too.

Paaalllleeeezzzzeeee the 8500 and 9500 are better. Arrows are just a nice gimmick. I go past those speed signs all teh time. My 8500 detects them every time. My V1 doesnt half the time. Plus the false alarms in the V1 happen 3 times more often as the 8500
