Radar Detectors 2009

What is a good radar detector to get these days? I have seen Escort, Cobra, Valentine-One. Some are cheaper than others. Consumer reports does not rate them. So anyone have any articles or web links to reviews on these? I am trying to make a decision on one.

Thanks!

Cool

Do a search of the web. You will find a ton of info. Have you been to Radar Roy's? He is just one place to start.......

Happy searching.

I have a Cobra 9430 that I got for about 100bucks. I'd say its a good unit for the money, saved me from radar a bunch of times, picks up laser too.

I have had the V1, 8500 x50 and the 9500i, which I just had upgrade to the 9500ix.

I would have to say there is currently nothing in the market even close to the 9500ix.
This thing is awesome. Very few false alarms, the V1 and 8500 x50 drove me crazy with all the false alarms.

How are the better radar detectors against laser? I pretty much gave up on radar detectors, because most cops by me use laser and I can't see how a laser detector can pick up laser until it is too late.

I personally have the Passport escort 9500i which has the GPS capability.

IMO, great product and if you accidentally leave it on your windshield, you can feel safer than leaving a v1.

I use a Vector 995. I have had it mounted to windshield for over 5 years. I never remove it & no one has tried to steal it (yet). It's the best deal & works great. It saved me 10x the cost in ticket prevention. Regarding Laser, I have only been hit with it 4x in 5 years. The Hiway Patrol in my area (So Cal) use Ka & this unit picks that up just fine.

I love it, has less "false" alarms than the V1 which I still love also but the laser shifter has worked for me a couple times... where the cop has tagged me with while going 17-20 over and didn't pull me over (did give me a look as I drove by..haha)... now I know this is not effective with every laser guns out there but over here its good

Also side note the state of Georgia allows Radar and laser jammers...

9500i- $400
8500 X50- $350
9500CI- $1500

I've never had the 9500i or x50 but I do have the 9500ci and this is the upgrade from what I can tell....
built into the car no windshield mount, also comes with the laser shifters, GPS antenna which learns the false alarms as you drive by one and programs it in real time...also USB connection to update once a week to the passport site done threw a flash drive.

Escort, Beltronics (same company), Valentine, and some Whistlers are very reliable radar detector brands. Please stay away from Cobra they are pretty bad. I have a Beltronics Vector and its been great.

what does it mean when they say 6 bands, 12 bands, etc... Does that mean it wont detect all radars/lasers?

X band = old technology
K = still used but rarely
Ka = Popular w/Hiway Patrol
Ku = Europe, not used here
Laser = newest radar, very accurate & narrow band. If your detector goes off it is probably too late.

There is no such thing as 12 bands it is mostly a marketing gimmick. Unless you count VG-2. SPECTRE, Safety Alert bands. They also say it detects four different types of laser, lidar is lidar.

because it's pointless to spend the extra if it's NOT illegal to have in the state/province you live in... there are only a couple states in the US that don't allow RD's. I think also truck drivers can't use RD's in ALL states... but not too sure.

I was going to buy this unit... when I was ordering... I called the company directly... the operator actually talked me out of it... and told me that the RX65's internals are pretty much identical (other than the "stealth" part).

I have the Sti Driver and it's a great detector that has great range. I get alerts with so much notice I almost think it's falsing but sure enough a cop is present. I have had Cobra and Escort in the past and this unit is better and it's undetectable as well.
