Radar Detector Plug Question

Hey guys, I've got a quick question for anyone with an Escort 9500i or 8500...

When the smart cord is plugged into the car, does yours light up without a detector plugged into the other end?

I'm trying to figure out if my plug/cord is screwed up or if its the detector itself. Just got this 9500i last week, worked just fine, and last night I was messing with a volt-meter to find out which wires are running power because I want to hardwire it. Never took anything apart, but when I plugged it back into my car, detector won't power up anymore... Tried it in another car, just don't have another plug or detector to check which of the 2 is messed up.

I dont remember if there is a fuse in the end of the cord or not ( i think there is) on my 8500 but i dont think it lights up with nothing plugged in. (since i have a hard wire kit)
Oh and Buy the hard wire kit for 20 some bucks and make it simple.

if you have a mirror that is powered, with a connector pretty close pick up a stealth cord.
www.stealthcords.com
just figure out what wire is the power and which one is the ground on the car, aand slide the pins into it. work perfectly for my IS.

I like the stealth wire kit, but I like having an accessible mute button. I ordered a hardwire kit yesterday, but I have no way of checking if something went wrong with my cord or if its my detector...

Can someone plz check and notice if the plug lights up without a detector plugged in? I'd really appreciate it...

And to answer your question, NO it doesnt light up without the detector hooked up. Take the 2 screws out of the cord and check the fuse.

mmm... there's no fuse in the plug, I've opened it a few times now. Just a couple wires leading to a small circuit board which smells burnt, so I'm hoping that's all it is.

The only thing I can think of that I did when I was checking it with the volt meter was to maybe create some sort of closed circuit between the power and the ground prongs?

I was thinking about all the different options and came down to wiring it to a "VSA/Cruise" switch and using that for power and mute for the detector
