Questions on Running out of GAS!!!

I have never ran out of gas. But i was wondering, does the car just shut off, or does it start stalling and choking? This came to mind when i drove my friends old car which the gas guage doesnt work and he goes by the miles the car has. lol..

But don't try it. The fuel pump uses the fuel going through it too cool it, so having it run dry can potentially damage the pump.

Same thing happened to me in my dads truck. But it was on the opposite side of main road. That whole ordeal was a PITA.

which is also why you shouldnt drive on the E all the time, generally it will cause your fuel pump to fail prematurely (although it depends on the design of the car).

Running out of gas is also bad because all the dirt and crap that sits at the bottom of the tank gets sucked into your motor

thanks all. But this leaves me with this other doubt. After this chokin and stalling.. how long do you have. Or is it choke choke DEAD. Does it give you time to run the car to the side of the road or to damn late once it starts to choke...?
