Question: Flat spot(s) on tread...

My son came in to visit me this weekend, as planned, to rotate his tires. He has an 07 stock Civic coupe. He is 20–and not (modestly) into his car like his 'old man'. But, at my urging, he was willing to do the heavy work (my bad back). During the work; I pointed out some flat areas on the left-rear tire, inner tread. I thought it was probably too late to do the rotation, but continued anyway. That tire with the flat area(s) moved to the left front, and back on the ground, was nearly flat (15psi). He pumped it up to 32psi, and it held the pressure overnight. But test driving the car; it made a 'wump-wumping' sound, over 30 mph. Is it more than just waiting too long to rotate the tires, or is the 'flat area(s)' due to rim damage, or poor alignment? I returned the tires to their original position Sunday, and the sound is gone. I ordered new back treads for him for next weekend.

This is a common issue with '06-up Civics. There's a Service Bulletin to replace the rear upper control arms with updated parts and an alignment. If the car is still under warr. Honda will foot the bill and depending on the mileage they will pay some of the cost for tires.

Wow! Thanks, poltergeist! And it is under warranty. Thanks, man.

I have an 07 Civic sedan myself and I have problems before myself. I guess I need to ask my service guy about it?

I have made an appointment where I bought the car, Pburg, NJ Honda, for the repair/replacement parts. But I don't like the service there.

My parents seem to like Clinton Honda on Rt. 22 FWIW. They bought their Civic there last August and I think have only been once for service, but so far so good.

Autosport Honda on Rt. 22 in Bridgewater is closer, but I have no idea how their service is.

Don't tell them the tire was low on pressure. Flat spotting also occurs when a tire sits on low pressure for too long. If they ask about the pressure just say, "I check it regularly." The service bulletin should be enough to get you the warranty work, but you want to avoid being put at fault.

Just a quick update for readers of this thread: With the service bulletin Honda issued regarding the rear suspension on civics, my son's 2007, the dealership will do a 100% replacement on his tires up to 9900 miles driven on the tires that replaced the original tires; or, a percentage of the cost over the 9900 miles. So, he should receive @ 85% towards new rear tires. Thanks again, to all the guys above for their help.
